Longmans, Green & Co. is a British publishing company originally founded as Longman by Thomas Longman (1699–1755) in 1724. In 1755, his nephew, Thomas Longman (1730–1797), became the sole proprietor of the company and the title of the firm changed to T. and T. Longman. He greatly extended the colonial trade of the firm. With the admittance of multiple new partners by 1823 (Owen Rees in 1794, Thomas Brown in 1811), the title became Longman, Hurst Rees, Orme, Brown & Green. In 1926, the firm was incorporated and became Longmans, Green & Co., Ltd. In 1968, Longman was acquired by the global publisher Pearson, owner of Penguin and The Financial Times, yet the company remained primarily in family control until 1972. Longman continued to exist as an imprint of Pearson, under the name Pearson Longman but is now primarily used by Pearson’s ELT (English Language Teaching) business.
