Archibald McGoun, B.A., B.C.L., was born on December 15, 1853, in Montreal, Quebec.

He was a lawyer, accountant, educator, and author. In 1890, he was hired to the second chair as Professor of Legal Bibliography, Librarian, and Faculty of Law Secretary at McGill University. In addition to these duties, performed until his retirement in 1920, he continued his legal practice, first with F. L. Béique and then with his own firm McGoun & England. In 1905, he was created K.C. in Quebec. He was the author of several books and speeches, e.g., "Federation of the Empire: An Address Before the University Literary Society" (1884) and "A Federal Parliament of the British People" (1890). McGoun was an avid snowshoer and Scottish dancer.

In 1887, he married Abigail MacKay (1862–). He died on June 5, 1921, in Montreal, Quebec.

McGillivrays, Thain and Company was formed in 1822 by Thomas Thain, a fur trader and former president of the New North West Company. He managed the company from 1822 to 1825. The company served as a business agent for the Hudson's Bay Company. It encountered serious financial difficulties and was dissolved in 1825.
