The Hall family was a Montreal and Quebec City-based family of merchants, tradespeople, and farmers. William Hall (1738-1795) was born in England and migrated to Andover, Massachusetts with his mother, Sarah Barker (unknown-approximately 1803) around 1755, upon the request of his uncle, Joseph Gibson. On 16 May 1761, William Hall married Christina Barbara Juncken (1739-1817), the daughter of Christina Dorothea Juncken and Johann Juncken, German immigrants who had arrived in Philadelphia in 1753. After marrying, they moved to Andover and had 7 sons together: Joseph Hall (??-1834), David Hall (1764-1796), William Hall (1768-1854), John Hall (1771-1822), Henry Hall (1772-1804), Jacob Hall (1777-approx. 1819), and Benjamin Hall (1779-1863).
William Hall (1767-1854) and his brother Henry moved to Quebec City in approximately 1791 to open a hat making shop with their uncle, Henry Juncken (died approx. 1802). Soon after, the other members of the family began moving to Montreal - Benjamin arriving in approximately 1793, Joseph and Jacob in 1797, John by 1799, and Christina Barbara in 1804. The brothers worked, at various times, as farmers, tanners, hat makers, bakers, and merchants. Benjamin and John married sisters, Charlotte and Harriet Morrison (1784-1871), the daughters of wealthy Montreal businessman James Morrison and Suzanne Lepallieur.
Family members of the next generation represented in the Hall family fonds include Amelia Hall (daughter of Joseph Hall), Charlotte (1810-1886) and Harriet Ann Hall (1813-1895, daughters of John Hall), and Archibald Hall (1812-1868, son of Jacob Hall). Edward Vennor (1807-1874), who married Harriet Ann Hall in 1834, is also represented in the fonds, as is their daughter, Charlotte Ann Vennor Linsday (1839-1912).
Amelia Christina Hall was born in Andover, Massachusetts, to Joseph Hall and Susannah Hall. She married William Muller, a soldier, on 13 February 1814 in Montreal. They had at least one child together. Their relationship deteriorated while Muller was away fighting in the War of 1812, with infidelity on Amelia's part, and domestic violence on Muller's.
Archibald Hall was a medical doctor who lived in Montreal. He was born on 8 November 1812 in Montreal, son of Jacob Hall and Rebecca Ferguson Hall. He was educated at the Royal Grammar School of Montreal, and in 1828 began an apprenticeship in medicine with Dr William Robertson at Montreal General Hospital. He was formally educated in medicine at McGill College and the University of Edinburgh, graduating with a doctorate of medicine in 1834. Archibald was appointed to the faculty of McGill in 1835, and taught topics including materia medica, chemistry, midwifery, and obstetrics. He was also very involved in medical writing and publishing, launching the British American Journal of Medical and Physical Science in 1845. He also had an active interest in natural history, writing his doctoral thesis on medicinal uses of plants for the respiratory system, and winning the silver medal from the Natural History Society of Montreal for a memoir on the mammals and birds of Montreal. He married Agnes Burgess of Scotland on 17 May 1838. They had three children together, Rebecca, Agnes, and James Burgess. Agnes died in 1843, and Archibald married Caroline Wurtele on 4 November 1846. Caroline died in 1857, and Archibald died on 14 February 1868.
Benjamin Hall was born on 1 June 1779 in Andover, Massachusetts, to William Hall and Christina Barbara Juncken Hall. He moved to Montreal in approximately 1800, where he established himself as a merchant and farmer. Hall was a member of the Montreal Militia, rising to the rank of Major by his retirement. He was also a member of the Masonic Union Lodge 8. Hall sat on the board of directors of the Bank of Canada in 1819. On 5 March 1818, he married Harriet Morrison, daughter of the merchant James Morrison and Suzanne LePallieur. Though they did not have children of their own, they raised their nieces Charlotte and Harriet Hall after the deaths of their parents, John Hall and Charlotte Morrison. Hall died in his Montreal home, Mount Tranquil, on 11 February 1863.
Charlotte Hall was born in Montreal on 13 June 1810, to John Hall and Charlotte Morrison. After the deaths of her parents, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Benjamin Hall and Harriet Morrison. She died in Montreal on 18 June 1886.
