Joseph Gould, the son of Ira Gould, owner of a large milling concern in Montréal, was choirmaster of the American Presbyterian Church and founded the Montreal Mendelssohn Choir in 1864.
Dr. Jean Gourdon was a 19th-century French naturalist, medical doctor, and professor at the veterinary school in Toulouse. He is best known for his botanical work, particularly concerning forages, pastures, and agricultural plants.
He co-authored "Nouvelle iconographie fourragère" (1871) with P. Naudin. This comprehensive two-volume work (text and atlas) details the botany, economy, and agriculture of fodder plants and harmful pasture plants. It included copper-engraved, colored plates. He also co-authored "Principes de Botanique" (1875) with Ch. Fourcade. This is a guide to botany for amateurs, featuring anatomical, organographic, and physiological studies. The publication is known for its ambitious "natural atlas," containing numerous mounted botanical specimens (samples) on its plates.
