John McLean (MacLean) was born on November 17, 1828, in Portsoy, Banffshire, Scotland.

He was a Church of England bishop and educator. He graduated with an M.A. from King’s College (University of Aberdeen) in Scotland, in 1851 and was ordained in the Church of England in 1858. He came to Canada as curate of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, Ontario, serving up to 1866 when he came to Red River, Manitoba, as Rector of St. John’s Cathedral and Archdeacon of Assiniboia. He also served as Professor of Divinity and Warden of St. John’s College, Winnipeg. During the Red River Rebellion (1869-1870), McLean counselled moderation. He frequently served as a go-between in complex negotiations over Riel’s prisoners and helped convince Riel to spare the life of Charles Boulton. He received honorary degrees from Trinity University, Toronto, Bishop’s College, Lennoxville, and Kenyon College, Ohio. In 1877, he was a member of the First Convocation of the University of Manitoba. In 1874, he was consecrated as the first Bishop of Saskatchewan.

In 1861, he married Kathleen Wilhelmina Flood (1842–1897). He died on November 7, 1886, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

James McLean was a farmer born in Ireland in approximately 1816. He moved to Quebec and lived in Godmanchester. He lived there with his wife Letticia and their children, Elizabeth, Margaret, James, Sarah, John, and William. In 1851, he purchased land in Hinchinbrooke with Alexander McLean from the Hall family. He died on 27 June 1889.

Hector McLean or MacLean was born in 1783 in Kingairloch, Scotland, the heir to the Estate of Kingairloch. He sold the estate and came to Pictou, Nova Scotia in 1803, where he set up a business on Deacons Wharf with his brother-in-law, Simon Fraser. He married a daughter of Captain Simon Fraser (father of explorer and fur trader Simon Fraser). He died in Pictou in 1827.

McLean, Calvin Stowe, 1889-1970

Calvin S. McLean emigrated to South Africa in 1910, after receiving his B.Sc. from McGill University. He was a pioneer in the development of South African gold and uranium mining. McLean also served on various committees and commissions and was chairman of the Prevention of Accidents Committee of the Chamber of Mines.

Alexander McLean was a farmer born in Scotland in approximately 1814. He moved to Quebec and purchased land in Hinchinbrooke from the Hall family in 1851. He lived there with his wife Janet and their children, John, Malcolm, Lachlan, Agnes, William, Jane, Janet, and Alexander. He died on 25 November 1884.
