Gardiner, J. Rawson (John Rawson), 1866-1956
Architect J. Rawson Gardiner designed Montreal buildings for 60 years. Born in London and trained there at Taylor & Gordon, he was transferred to Montreal in 1887. By 1891, he opened his own office inn the city, then in 1894 began a five-year partnership with Alex G. Fowler and continued on with the business after Fowler died in 1899. He became president of the Province of Quebec Association of Architects in 1911. He also wrote a series of essays on the history of Canadian architecture that was published in the Toronto architectural journal “Construction” in 1931. Many Anglican churches , such as Saint Luke’s in Rosemont and Saint Barnabbas in Saint Lambert, as well as Westmount homes were designed by him before he retired in 1943.
