Hall, Archibald, 1812-1868

Archibald Hall was a medical doctor who lived in Montreal. He was born on 8 November 1812 in Montreal, son of Jacob Hall and Rebecca Ferguson Hall. He was educated at the Royal Grammar School of Montreal, and in 1828 began an apprenticeship in medicine with Dr William Robertson at Montreal General Hospital. He was formally educated in medicine at McGill College and the University of Edinburgh, graduating with a doctorate of medicine in 1834. Archibald was appointed to the faculty of McGill in 1835, and taught topics including materia medica, chemistry, midwifery, and obstetrics. He was also very involved in medical writing and publishing, launching the British American Journal of Medical and Physical Science in 1845. He also had an active interest in natural history, writing his doctoral thesis on medicinal uses of plants for the respiratory system, and winning the silver medal from the Natural History Society of Montreal for a memoir on the mammals and birds of Montreal. He married Agnes Burgess of Scotland on 17 May 1838. They had three children together, Rebecca, Agnes, and James Burgess. Agnes died in 1843, and Archibald married Caroline Wurtele on 4 November 1846. Caroline died in 1857, and Archibald died on 14 February 1868.

Hall, Benjamin, 1779-1863

Benjamin Hall was born on 1 June 1779 in Andover, Massachusetts, to William Hall and Christina Barbara Juncken Hall. He moved to Montreal in approximately 1800, where he established himself as a merchant and farmer. Hall was a member of the Montreal Militia, rising to the rank of Major by his retirement. He was also a member of the Masonic Union Lodge 8. Hall sat on the board of directors of the Bank of Canada in 1819. On 5 March 1818, he married Harriet Morrison, daughter of the merchant James Morrison and Suzanne LePallieur. Though they did not have children of their own, they raised their nieces Charlotte and Harriet Hall after the deaths of their parents, John Hall and Charlotte Morrison. Hall died in his Montreal home, Mount Tranquil, on 11 February 1863.

Charlotte Hall was born in Montreal on 13 June 1810, to John Hall and Charlotte Morrison. After the deaths of her parents, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Benjamin Hall and Harriet Morrison. She died in Montreal on 18 June 1886.

Hall, Christina Barbara Juncken, 1739-1817

Christina Barbara Juncken was born on 7 March 1739 in Durlach, Germany to Johann Ernst Juncken and Christina Dorothea Juncken. In 1753, she migrated with her family to Philadelphia, where they settled. She married William Hall on 16 May 1761 in Philadelphia, and they moved together to Andover, Massachusetts. They had eight children together: a daughter who died in childhood and seven sons (Joseph, David, William, John, Benjamin, Henry, and Jacob). After the death of her husband in 1795, Christina Barbara's children began moving to Quebec City and Montreal. She joined them in Montreal in 1804 and she lived there until her death on 23 August 1817.

David Hall was born in approximately 1764 in Andover, Massachusetts, to William Hall and Christina Barbara Juncken Hall. He was a farmer who worked on his grandmother, Sarah Barker's, land. He married Lydia Holt on 25 December 1787 in Andover. They did not have any children. In 1796, David Hall went to help fight a fire at a neighbour's property and was killed in an explosion when the fire reached a store of gunpower.

Douglas John Hall was born in 1928 in Ingersoll, Ontario, to John Darius Hall and Louisa Irene Sandick. He was schooled in Innerkip and Woodstock, Ontario. He married Rhoda Catherine Palfrey in New York City in 1960, and between 1961 and 1967 had four children.

Dr. Hall attended Woodstock Business College and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto from 1948 to 1949 before attending to the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Hall received his Bachelors of Arts from the University of Western Ontario in 1953. From 1953 to 1960 he attended the Union Theological Seminary in residence in New York City where he took graduate studies in Systemic Theology, earning a Masters of Divinity in 1956, a Masters of Sacred Theology in 1957, and a Doctor of Theology in 1963. He was Ordained in Stratford, Ontario in 1956 and was the minister of St. Andrew’s United Church in Blind River, Ontario from 1960 to 1962. Following this he was made Principal of St. Paul’s United College at the University of Waterloo from 1962 to 1965. From 1965 to 1975 he was appointed the McDougald Professor of Systemic Theology at St. Andrew’s College in Saskatoon.

Dr. Hall joined the Faculty of Religious Studies at McGill University in 1975, teaching Christian Theology. He was promoted from Associate Professor to Full Professor in 1977. After his retirement in 1995, he was granted the status of Professor Emeritus in 1996 and remains a faculty lecturer at McGill University. During his time at St. Andrew’s College and McGill University, Dr. Hall also taught as a guest lecturer from the 1970s through the early 2000s in Germany, France, Japan and the United States.

Dr. Hall has received numerous honorary degrees, including an L.L.D. from the University of Waterloo in 1992, an S.T.D. from the Montreal Diocesan Theological College, and five D.D.s, awarded by Queen’s University in 1988, Presbyterian College, Montreal in 1995, Victoria University at the University of Toronto in 2003, Huron University College in 2008 and the United Theological College, Montreal. Dr. Hall also received the Order of Canada in 2003, honouring his contributions to the field of theology and his unique Canadian approach.

Dr. Hall has published over thirty books since 1972, as well as journal articles, booklets and many contributions to edited works. A number of his works have been reprinted and translated into both French and German. His most famous work is his Christian Theology in a North American Context trilogy, which includes Thinking the Faith (1989), Professing the Faith (1993), and Confessing the Faith (1996). Professing the Faith, Confessing the Faith, and his 2003 book The Cross in Our Context: Jesus and the Suffering World have all won the Academy of Parish Clergy award for the Book of the Year.

Dr. Hall is a member of the United Church, and his research is focused on Missiology, the study of mission work and missionaries, and Systematics, the orderly and rational study of religion and religious texts.

Hall, Errol V. (Errol Victor), 1887-1963

Captain Errol Hall, was born in Montmorency Falls, Quebec. Listing his occupation as “bank clerk,” he left for France in 1916 as a lieutenant in the 87th Battalion of the Canadian Grenadier Guards and was severely wounded that November in the fighting at the Somme. He then served as aide-de-camp to General James Harold Elmsley (GOC) and later went to Siberia as a captain with the Canadian Siberian Force. There he was appointed secretary to the High Commissioner of Britain. Shortly after the war, he joined the 65th Irish-Canadian Rangers.

Fairman Hall was born on March 6, 1840, in Dudswell, Quebec.

He was a farmer, prospector, public servant, and poet. There is a Hall Creek in Dudswell Township named after him. He spent hours exploring the creek and surrounding hills in search of gold nuggets. One day, he discovered some and informed the government. Since the government wanted to take it, he refused to reveal the exact location and took his secret to the grave. The Hall Creek gold deposits were identified in 1851 and extensive exploration work was carried out during the 1890s. Hall also served as a city councilor for many years. He published his poetry in The Sherbrooke Gazette. One of his poems written on the occasion of the unveiling of a monument to the pioneers in 1900 was entitled "Historic Sketch in Verse". His poems earned him the name "Spirit of the Peak".

In 1863, he married Martha Sophia Gilbert (1841–1912). He died on January 23, 1925, in Dudswell, Quebec.

Henry Hall was a merchant born on 29 July 1772 in Andover, Massachusetts, the son of William Hall and Christina Barbara Juncken Hall. Henry moved to Quebec City in approximately 1792. He married Loisa Harrison on 7 November 1802, and they had a son, Erle Henry Hall, in 1803. Henry died in Quebec City on 16 May 1804.
