Born in Chester, Vermont, Frederick Gowing was a carpenter engaged in the architectural business in Fitchburg, Massachusetts until he moved to Boston where he was engaged as an architect for 40 years. He drew plans for the construction of buildings in various sections of New England and during the World War he was an inspector of airplanes for the government.
He was a member of the Field and Forest Club of Boston and died aged 81 at his home in Fitchburg. He was survived by a daughter and 2 sisters.

William Graff was born in the Netherlands and educated at the University of Louvain, where he received his Ph.D. in 1923. For six years he taught German and Dutch in schools at Huy and St.Truiden Belgium, and conducted dialect research in the Rhineland of Germany for a year. In 1924, Graff was appointed instructor in French and German at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He came to McGill in 1926 as Assistant Professor of German, became Associate Professor in 1929 and Professor in 1948. He also served as head of the department from 1939 to 1956 and retired in the following year as Emeritus Professor.

Stewart Grafftey was a Montreal businessman. When enlisting in the military he gave his occupation as “merchant,” and in the 1940s he stated on a voter’s list that he was in the lumber business. He served as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserves from 1914 to 1920, earning both a Victory Medal and British War Medal. In 1924, then a Second lieutenant in the RNVR, he received the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for service from 1923 to 1935.
