Born in England, John Howard Toynbee Falk (1881-1950) was a pioneering figure in the development of the education of social workers in Canada and the provision of social services in Montreal. After travelling to Canada in 1908, he became the founding director and lecturer at McGill University’s School of Social Workers and the secretary (1921) and then first executive director (1922) of the Montreal Council of Social Agencies. In 1930 Falk left Montreal to pursue his career in Vancouver and then settled in the United States, holding various positions for charitable organizations around the U.S. until his death in 1950 in Amherst, Massachusetts
