This private club was founded in 1902 and incorporated in 1903. It brought together engineers and other related professionals. In the beginning, the club held its gatherings at the Windsor Hotel before purchasing and renovating the William Dow house.

H. W. England served as a librarian in the Zoology department of the British Museum starting in 1900. When he died in 1937, the library housed approximately 45,000 volumes.
