William Stieven Paterson of Montreal and Lac Ouimet, Quebec, and the maternal grandfather of William Bruce Ross, Douglas Allen Ross, Dorothy Jean Ross and Alison Ross, was born in Scotland in 1841. He emigrated with his family to Canada in 1842. He had several children including Edward Russell Paterson and Kate Elizabeth Ross (nee Paterson). In 1871 he took a trip through Civil War country in the Southern United States and also traveled to Cuba.

John Paterson was born in 1835, in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. The 1871 census lists his profession as miller; the 1881 census lists his profession as lawyer. He married Janet Watson. He died on July 26, 1919, in Maryborough Township, Wellington, Ontario.

Born in 1814, James Paterson left his employment as a blanket weaver in Dundee, Scotland, and emigrated to Canada with his wife and two sons, Robert and William, in 1842. The family lived first in Milne's Hollow east of Toronto (1842), then River Humber west of Toronto (1845), and Caledonia west of Hamilton where James suffered from Malaria in 1852. In the same year the family traveled to and settled near Meaford, Ontario, building a log house ("Blantyre") which would reside in the family until 1963.

Edward Russell Paterson, maternal uncle of William Bruce Ross, Douglas Allen Ross, Dorothy Jean Ross and Alison Elizabeth Ross, was born in Montreal June 11 1887. He took a B.A. in the Ordinary Course, Class II in 1909. After a period of service during World War I, Paterson returned to Montreal and became Secretary of the Boy Scouts Association of the Province of Quebec. He became a teacher in his sixties and until his retirement in 1968 gave courses at Sir George Williams University in Astronomy, Geology and the History of Science.
