James Constantine Pilling was born on November 16, 1846, in Washington, D.C.

He was a Congressional stenographer-transcriptionist and a pioneering ethnologist. He was educated at Gonzaga College. He taught himself Pitman shorthand while still in grade school, becoming a highly proficient stenographer. In 1875, he was hired to help administer the U.S. Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountain regions. In 1879, Pilling became the chief clerk of the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Ethnology. He was also responsible for the development of the Bureau’s library and for maintaining its archives system. In his free time, he compiled a series of extensive bibliographies of the cultures, mythologies, and languages of the North and Central American aboriginal peoples. In 1885, he published his 1,200-page "Proof-sheets of a Bibliography of North American Indian Languages".

In 1873, he married Emma Theresa Young (1847–1877), and in 1888, he remarried Marry “Minnie” Lois Harper (1860-1940). He died on July 26, 1895, in Olney, Montgomery County, Maryland

Dr. Louis Pilkington Jackson was born abt. 1864 in Plymouth, Devonshire, England.

He was a physician. He received his medical education at King's College and obtained his qualifications in 1886. He was a medical officer to the Millbay and Devonport Stations of the Great Western Railway. In 1888, he was elected Assistant-Physician to the Plymouth Public Dispensary. He was a member of the British Medical Association and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

About 1887, he married Ethel Katie D'Orville Smith (1860-1935). He died from scarlet fever on September 1, 1889, in Plymouth, Devonshire, England.

Ian C. Pilarczyk was born in 1969. He received a B.A. with Honours in Philosophy from McGill University and a J.D. cum laude from Boston University School of Law in 1995. In 2003, Pilarczyk completed a Doctor of Civil Law degree from McGill, was named to the Dean’s Honour List, and was awarded the Osgoode Society Prize for Legal History and the Dean’s Research Fellowship. He is a lecturer at Tufts University and Boston University School of Law. This collection is composed of McGill memorabilia collected by Pilarczyk between 2000 and 2018, and includes articles, news clippings, programs (mostly football), pamphlets, photographs, objects (such as pins, buttons, medals, ribbons, humidors, spoons), addresses, medical notebooks, LPs and prints.
