Violet Coughlin, professor of library science, was born in Montréal. After receiving her B.A. from McGill in 1928, she taught at Montréal High School before returning to McGill for her B.L.S. (1938). From 1941 to 1952, she was librarian of Royal Victoria College. She then joined the faculty of the School of Library Science at McGill, where she taught until her retirement as Emeritus Professor in 1976. During this period, she earned an M.A. (1958) and D.L.S. (1966) from Columbia University, and served as director of the school for 1972-1973. Her doctoral thesis was published as Larger Units of Public Library Service in Canada (Metuchen, N.J., 1968). Coughlin passed away on December 29, 2001 in Unionville, Ontario.
Richard Coulter is a former CBC audio and TV technician, announcer, writer, music producer (1965-1976), Network Executive Producer in the Radio Music Department (1977-1982) and Coordinator of Radio Training for the English Network (1982-7). He studied Arts and Fine Arts at United College, Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba, and Music at the University of Durham (UK) and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Mr. Coulter’s distinguished career at the CBC spanned thirty-four years, from 1953 to 1987. First hired as a radio technician in Winnipeg, he would go on to fill increasingly influential roles at CBC Toronto. Several of Mr. Coulter’s radio productions have won awards, including a number from the Canadian Music Council and a Gabriel Award (USA), for Toronto composer Ben Steinberg’s commission, Echoes of Children (1979). His 1976 John Cage commission for the American bicentennial, A Lecture on the Weather, was chosen as the CBC’s entry for the prestigious Prix Italia. Mr. Coulter has also taught at Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ontario, in the Radio and Television Arts program.
