Robin Skelton was born October 12, 1925, at Easington, East Yorkshire, England.
He was a British-born academic, writer, poet, critic, and anthologist. He was educated at the University of Leeds (B.A., 1950; M.A., 1951). From 1944 to 1947, he served with the Royal Air Force in India. He later taught at Manchester University (1953-1962), where he was a founding member of The Peterloo Group. In 1963, he emigrated with his family to Canada and began teaching at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, where he founded the Department of Creative Writing. Skelton was an authority on Irish literature. He was also well known for his work as a literary editor, a founder and editor with John Peter of The Malahat Review, and a translator. Being a practising Wiccan, Skelton also published several books on the subject of the occult and other neopagan religions. He was the author of numerous collections of poems and books of fiction.
In 1957, he married Sylvia Mary Jarrett (1927-1998). He died on August 22, 1997, in Victoria, British Columbia.
Sonja Ann Skarstedt was born on October 2, 1960, in Montreal, Quebec.
She was a Canadian poet, writer, playwright, painter, and illustrator. In 1982, she graduated from McGill University with B.A. in English Literature. She was the founder, publisher, and editor of the literary review Zymergy from 1987 to 1991. This bi-annual periodical was the recipient of many Canada Council grants. As the creator, she was involved in all aspects of the printing process, from editing the content, layout and design, typesetting and paste-ups, and promotion. She has published book reviews pseudonymously for Zymergy and The Montreal Gazette. In 1990, she founded a small Canadian publishing company Empyreal Press, focused on poetry and short fiction. She was also a writer for the comic book Lincoln-16, with her husband Geoff Isherwood as the illustrator. Along with her written material, Skarstedt also worked as a freelance editor and graphic illustrator. Her poetry was published in a variety of publications, including Scrivener (1981), The Antigonish Review (1983), Rolling Stone (1986), Poetry Canada Review (1986) and Canadian Literature (1991). Some of her illustrations were featured in such publications as Poetry Canada Review (1989) and a portrait of Phyllis Webb on the cover of West Coast Line (1991). Additionally, she published several books, e.g., “Mythographies” (1990), “A Demolition Symphony” (1995), “Beautiful Chaos” (2000), “Saint Francis of Esplanade” (2001) and “In the House of the Sun” (2005). In 2007, she created the Skarwood Channel on the internet social media site YouTube, featuring a series of short video productions.
She died on July 31, 2009, in Montreal, Quebec.
Emil Skamene is a Canadian immunologist and medical researcher. He is the Director of Research for the McGill University Health Centre, the Director of the Centre for the Study of Host Resistance, and a Professor in the Department of Medicine, the Department of Human Genetics, and the Institute of Parasitology. Skamene joined the McGill Group in Medical Genetics in 1991 as an expert on genetic mechanisms of resistance to infectious disease.
Born in Scotland, Alexander Skakel received his M.A. from King's College, Aberdeen in 1797. Two years later he came to Canada and established a school in Québec. He shortly transferred to Montréal, and from 1800 to 1818 his "Classical and Mathematical School" was the main educational institution of the English-speaking population. Skakel's school was absorbed into the Royal Grammar School in 1818, and he remained as Principal until his death. Skakel was active in promoting the scientific life of the city through the Montreal Natural History Association and the Montreal General Hospital.
