Phyllis Buchanan Fonds

Fonds contains mainly J.E. Buchanan's correspondence, notably his correspondence with Phyllis Buchanan prior to their marriage, newspaper clippings, agendas and administrative paperwork concerning Phyllis Buchanan and her family, with material related for the First World War and children education in the first half of the 20th century.

Nicole Allardet Collection

Collection consists of an illustrated manuscript containing a map and brief guidebook to Paris landmarks, created by Nicole Allardet probably during the 1940s or 1950s. The item is inscribed to Vivienne Horne. A folded booklet on heavy grey paper, the guidebook contains twelve panels, ten of which feature a gouache illustrated vignette of a Paris landmark and a short handwritten description in white. The landmarks include the Jardin du Luxembourg, Opera House, Eiffel Tower, the river Seine, the Bois de Vincennes, Notre-Dame de Paris, the Jardin des Tuileries, the Champs-Élysées, Montmartre, and the Luxor Obelisk in the Place de la Concorde. In the centermost two panels is a simple map of Paris showing the landmarks depicted.

Postcard Album fonds

Fonds consists of an album of chiefly scenic postcards. Roughly half depict the western regions of Canada and the United States, including: Los Angeles, Pasadena, and San Francisco, California; Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia; the Rockies; and Medicine Hat, Alberta. Other Canadian locations are represented including Ontario and Saskatchewan. European postcards make up roughly the second half of the postcards and are mostly from England, with some from Paris. A couple postcards feature cartoons or humourous scenes. One photographic postcard features kittens and there is one Christmas-themed postcard. Some of the postcards appear to have been sent between members of the Francis family of Headingley, Manitoba, including Lester Francis, Etta Francis, and Russel Francis.

Menu Collection

Collection consists of menus acquired individually by the library. Menus date back to 1877, but most of the menus are twentieth century. The bulk of menus are from Montreal-area restaurants and hotels, representing French, Quebecois, and other styles of cuisine such as Indian. Some menus are from specific dinners given at hotels, special events, or in honour of dignitaries, such as a dinner for Edward, Prince of Wales, 1919. A subset of menus relate specifically to travel and include train dining car menus and steamship menus.

Philip Luke Collection

Collection consists of one bound manuscript notebook softbound in a piece of brown leather. The notebook dates chiefly from 1841 and was produced in St. Armand by Philip Luke. The notebook contains a title page that has been lettered, illustrated, and coloured by hand: A Latin Translation / by Philip Luke. St. Armand. 1841. Commenced April 4th. The text within this first portion of the notebook is Aesop's Fables in English and Latin on facing pages. The first part of the manuscript ends with "13. Horse and Ass" (Latin is incomplete) and "32. Widow and Servants" (Latin text missing). The following leaf contains two medical recipes: "A cure for a felon or whitlow," refering to an abscess or infection of the fingertip and consisting of a paste made from egg yolk, honey, turpentine spirits, camphor, and flour, and "A reciet for the inflammatory rheumatism," involving a wine-based tonic containing three types of bark, horseradish, brandy, and tar water. Following another blank leaf, a partial letter is found dated 1839. Philip Luke's text begins again in the latter part of the manuscript with a second coloured title page: "Dialogues and Declamations." There is also one loose note laid in dated 1809, a receipt for 100$.

Collection consists of a manuscript petition in French written on behalf of Jean Baptiste Lepine for a ferry from Rivière des Prairies to the river end of Île Jésus, dated 12 April 1809. The petition is signed with his mark. The petition also includes the signatures or marks of a number of other signatories, including Jacob Oldham, Roderick Mackenzie, and Simon Fraser. On verso is a docket title and information in English about reciept of the petition and a note that the request was granted.

Marquis de la Jonquière Collection

Consists of an English translation of a letter to the Marquis de la Jonquière written by Antoine-Louis Rouillé, comte de Jouy, secretary of state for the French Navy, at Versailles, dated 28 February 1750. The letter discusses an immediate release of prisoners of war taken during conflicts between the French and British colonies. It also includes a mention of Indigenous allies of England and France, and Indigenous people captured during the conflicts: "the Indian Prisoners among the two Nations be likewise released, but after all the French and English Prisoners are released" The letter also includes the name of examiner Josiah Willard, secretary of the province of Massachusetts-Bay.

William Shaw and Simon Fraser Papers

Collection contains a "Charterparty of Affreightment" signed on 14 September 1778 between Hugh Wylee, captain of the ship Dalling, and William Shaw and Simon Fraser, merchants of Quebec City. The contract contains the terms under which Shaw and Fraser hired Wylee and his ship and crew for a commercial journey from Quebec City to the Bay of Chaleure in Gaspey (now Gaspé), and from there to Kingston, Jamaica. In exchange for carrying and unloading Shaw and Fraser's cargo, Wylee received 800 pounds and a portion of the profits from the sale of the goods.

William Taylor Papers

Collection consists of two commercial documents bound together that record the exchange of goods between John Taylor of Queensferry, Scotland, and William Taylor of Montreal. The first document is a one-page list of unsold goods, entitled "List of goods on Mr Wm Taylors [sic] hands remaining unsold as per account sales, sent 11th October 1787 - tho' shipt per the Elizabeth, A. Syme April 1786." It lists a variety of goods, including fabrics, horse tack, carpet, and beer, along with their values. The second document is an inventory of a shipment, entitled "Invoice of a cargo of goods sent per the Elizabeth, Captn A. Syme, to be sold on my account by Mr William Taylor, Merchant Montreal, Queensferry, March 16, 1787." The invoice lists goods - such as fabrics, accessories, tools, household goods, beer and wine, and sugar - as well as insurance, carriage, and customhouse fees.

Travel Photo Album Collection

Collection consists of an album of travel photographs (chiefly black and white, with some colour). Captions date the photographs to between 1946-1956 and then to between 1989-1994. The captions also include information about the photographs themselves. The first portion of the album contains photographs taken in Niagara Falls, Manitoulin Island, northern Ontario, Bermuda, the Maritime provinces, and the United States, including Howe Caverns, Fort Williams, New York, Yellowstone National Park, Plymouth Rock, Washington, New Orleans, and Mackinac Island, dated between 1946 and 1956. The second portion contains photographs dated from 1898-1994 and documents travel to Israel, Albania, the former Yugoslavia, Russia, Estonia, England, Greece, Costa Rica, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Ukraine. The album is cloth bound in blue with the title "Snaps" in black with painted tulips.
