Office files

This series consists of alphabetically ordered office files, mostly from the 1980s. The files contain material concerning various medical and history of medicine associations. There are also a small number of files on various colleagues and patients. These files do not include patient files with case histories.

Professional correspondence

The series consists of professional correspondence, including both incoming and outgoing letters to Abbott and sent by her. Many letters discuss specific cases and autopsies. Letters are often accompanied by reprints, notes, electrocardiograms, and photographs.

Patient records, 1926-1939

This series consists of patient records started in 1926 and not consulted after 1939. Most of the files contain heart sounds diagrams drawn by Dr. Segall, 6x12'' clinical history forms, sections of electrocardiograms attached to dated cards, as well as 4x6" normal heart sounds record forms completed by Dr. Segall that are often accompanied by sections of electrocardiogram readings. Many files also contain correspondence between Dr. Segall and other doctors, medical institutions, and health insurance companies, and occasionally correspondence between Dr. Segall and the patient and/or the patient's family.

Patient records, 1926-1984

This series consists of the records of patients who died between 1926 and 1984. Like most other patient files of the fonds, almost all of these files contain heart sounds diagrams drawn by Dr. Segall, 6x12" clinical history forms, sections of electrocardiograms attached to dated cards, as well as 4x6" normal heart sounds record forms completed by Dr. Segall which are often accompanied by sections of electrocardiogram readings. Many files also contain correspondence between Dr. Segall and other doctors, medical institutions, and health insurance companies, and occasionally correspondence between Dr. Segall and the patient and/or the patient's family. In addition, some of the series' records are accompanied by a clipping of the patient's newspaper obituary.

Visual items and Reference Material, 1927-1959

Series D consists of photographs, postcards, slides, x-rays, and other visual material and artifacts such as copper printing plates. The visual material is located within other series, particularly the Correspondence Series A, but described individually here.

Research Notebooks, 1927-1957

Series A contains Dr. Elliott’s research notebooks from his association with Selwyn College, Cambridge, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Montreal Neurological Institute. Some of this research was collaborative. Most of the series comprises research relating to the study of brain trauma as a result of head injury or neurosurgery.
This series is divided into three (3) sub-series:
A/1) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1927-1933
A/2) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1933-1949
A/3) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1944-1957

Files on MNI fellows

Series consists of a drawer of catalogue cards with information concerning most MNI Fellows from between the institute's opening to the 1970s. Much of this information consists of mailing addresses which were compiled in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and is thus likely no longer accurate. Many of the cards are also accompanied by photographs of the particular Fellow.

Professional Correspondence

Series A contains correspondence concerning a wide variety of medical topics. The majority of this correspondence concerns Dr. Cone and his association with the Presbyterian Hospital, McGill University, the Royal Victoria Hospital and the Montreal Neurological Institute. Correspondence relating to the development of improved neurological instruments is also included in this series. Also includes obituaries of Dr. Cone.
