Original historical records (de Sola, Hart, Joseph)

Series consists of original records relating primarily to the Hart, Joseph and de Sola families; however, materials relating to the de Sola family dominate the series. Includes records relating to Abraham de Sola, Abraham's father David Aaron de Sola as well as Abraham's sons Aaron David Meldola de Sola and Clarence Isaac de Sola. Also Includes records of the early Hart family, mostly concerning Aaron Hart and the family's settlement in Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

The documents primarily include correspondence to and from Abraham de Sola and to a lesser extent his sons Aaron David Meldola & Clarence Isaac de Sola. There is some early correspondence by David Aaron de Sola, Abraham de Sola's father. As well, the series Includes personal correspondence between Abraham de Sola and his wife Esther Joseph de Sola and their children (particularly Aaron David Meldola and Clarence Isaac).

Abraham de Sola's correspondence relates to his work as reverend of the Shearith Israel (Montreal) synagogue; Professor of Oriental Languages at McGill University; and as a lodge member of the Ancient Jewish Order of Kesher Shel Barzel, to which he gave his name to its first Canadian lodge in 1872, the De Sola Lodge no. 89. There is extensive correspondence relating to the lodge as well as other lodges in the order, the majority located in the United States. The correspondence relating to Abraham de Sola's professorship at McGill University includes a number of letters from Principal William Dawson.

The correspondence in the fonds related to David Aaron Meldola de Sola focuses on his assuming the position of Reverend of the Shearith Israel (Montreal) Synagogue upon his father's death in 1882, and Includes a number of handwritten and printed sermons given to the congregation. The correspondence and documents relating to Clarence Isaac de Sola focuses mainly on his role as the president of the Federation of Zionist Societies of Canada from 1899 to 1920. This includes sermons, conference proceedings, as well correspondence between Clarence Isaac de Sola and the leader of the Zionist movement, Theodore Herzl.

Fonds consists of correspondence, research and genealogical notes, articles produced by Evelyn Miller's activities as a researcher, historian, writer and archivist. There is also a considerable amount of primary source material collected by Evelyn Miller on her family; particularly correspondence, sermons and articles relating predominately to Abraham de Sola but also to David Aaron de Sola (Abraham's father), Aaron David Meldola de Sola, Clarence Isaac de Sola and the Hart family. The fonds have a vast amount of photographs mostly of the de Sola Family, but also the David, Hart and Joseph families. The fonds is composed of the following series:

Although there are two separate series, it must be noted that some information contained in the series files are often relevant to more than that area of activity. This is especially true of correspondence files.

Sola, Abraham de, 1825-1882

Book, [A Morsel of Bread] Rabbi Elisa Habillo [Hebrew]

File contains a printing of Rabbi Elisha Hablllo's work 'A Morsel of Bread' [English translation of title], written in Hebrew. The book was published in Livorno [Leghorn], Italy in 1794 by Raphael Meldola (1754-1828), Abraham de Sola's maternal grandfather. The book is a description of the grace and blessings that should be used in conjunction with meals as well as any rules that accompany these blessings. Also included in the book was a clipping from 1850 from the JewIsh Chronicle authored by D. Meldola regarding the work of scholar Philoxeme Luzzato. This "D. Meldola" is possibly David Meldola (1797-1853), eldest son of Raphael Meldola and a co-founder of the Jewish Chronicle. An English translation of the book's title page is provided In the file.

Documents, Correspondence de Sola Family

File consists of original correspondence and documents relating or written by the Josephs, Harts and de Solas. There Is some correspondence between Evelyn Miller and David de Sola Pool, Rev. of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of New York. Also includes typed documents authored by or about David de Sola Pool, a letter from Pierre Mendes (France January 19th 1960), and assorted correspondence compiled by Evelyn Miller including: letter from Isaac Leeser for Sarah Joseph, documents certifying Jesse Joseph's Brit Mila (circumcision) dated 1819, document certifying the same for Gershom Joseph, certification in Hebrew dated 1861, letter dated 1811 from Gershom Mendes Selxas Minister of the Congregation Shearith Israel In New York, name certification letter for Sarah Matlld David daughter of Aaron Hart David and Catherine Joseph, and a letter to Aaron Hart from David Levi dated 1794.

Sermons by D.A. de Sola, Meldola de Sola & Others

File consists of original handwritten sermons by David Aaron de Sola, Abraham de Sola and Aaron David Meldola de Sola, Including the following by D.A. de Sola: "A sermon of the Excellence of the Holy Law and the Necessity and Importance of Religious Instruction Delivered at the Synagogue of the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation in London, 26th March, 1831" and "A Sermon Delivered at the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, Beavis Marks on Wednesday, 7th Nlssan (24th March), 5607 [1847],". By Meldola de Sola: "The Duty of Orthodox Congregations A Sermon Preached before the Congregation "Shearlth Israel," New York, in the Synagogue, West Nineteenth Street, On Sabbath Shemoth, Tebeth 23rd 5648, January 7,1888," and "Zionism A Sermon Delivered by the Rev. Meldola de Sola of Montreal, on the seventh day of Passover 5660," [1900]. One sermon Is typed, "A Good Name Sermon delivered Heshvan 20th (Nov. 14th) 5669 in the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue Montreal by Rabbi de Sola (Saturday, November 14, 1908).

Correspondence, Abraham de Sola

File consists of original correspondence with Abraham de Sola. There Is also de Sola's fire insurance policy (1849). Most of Abraham de Sola's correspondence is related to his position as Reverend at Shearith Israel (Montreal) but also includes a letter from Abraham de Sola's mother to his father who had been in Amsterdam on business (dated Tuesday, August 13, 1833) and a page with messages and signatures of the children to their father, D. de Sola.
