Walter Crane Sketchbook Collection

  • CA RBD MSG 1191
  • Collection
  • 1864-1905

The collection consists of six of Walter Crane’s sketchbooks. Two of the sketchbooks date to the summer of 1864, and the remaining four date to the summers of 1897, 1901, 1903, and 1905. The collection’s dates offer a contrast between Crane’s early and later career as an artist. The contents feature his preliminary designs, pictorial observations of the world, and textual notes.

Crane’s sketchbooks are filled with landscapes and towns and building interiors and exteriors from Crane’s life in England and travels to Ireland. Aligned with Crane’s commissioned and published works, the sketchbooks include sketches for his book designs, a heraldic eagle, and plans for a panel painting or frieze. Flora, fauna, men, women, children, Greco-Roman figures and architectural details make up the wide range of subjects covered in the sketchbooks.

The drawings range from Crane’s rough ideas expressed in his preliminary sketches and line drawings to tonal drawings and studies of individuals, landscapes, and flowers. The drawing techniques play with perspective, topography, bodily gesture, facial expression, tone, line, outline, form, and colour.

Crane’s notations appear throughout the sketchbooks, including on the sketches themselves and on their facing pages. He also hand-wrote inspirational excerpts from poems and essays which includes quotes from Charles Kingsley and John Ruskin works.

Between blank and torn pages, the medium for the textual and visual content shifts between pen and pencil on paper. Several landscapes are full-page watercolours on paper.

Sir Arthur Currie Collection

  • CA MUA RG2 Currie
  • Collection
  • 1901-1945

The collection consists of a selection of records reflecting Sir Arthur Currie's tenure as Principal of McGill University from 1920 to 1933. His administration was marked by the establishment of the Faculty of Music, the School for Graduate Nurses, and the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. Constructed during this period were Moyse Hall, the Roddick Gates, a Biology Building (now the F. Cyril James Administration Building), and additions to Royal Victoria College and Redpath Library. Currie died in office on 30 November 1933. His records form a part of the McGill University's executive and administrative records, RG2: Office of the Principal and Vice-Chancellor. The Principal is the academic head and chief administrative officer of the University. Under the original Charter of 1821, the Principal constituted with the Board of Governors and the Fellows (now the Senate) a body politic and corporate. Later amendments to the Charter and changes in the University statutes have not significantly altered the position of Principal. Ex officio, by virtue of his office, the Principal is also Vice-Chancellor of the University, a member of the Board of Governors and Chairman of the Senate. Frequently, it has been the Principal's vision and personality which have determined the course of McGill's development; therefore, the records not only document the administrative activities of the office, but also often reflect the character of the whole institution. Currie's records fall more or less into the three general series: external correspondence, internal administration and academic matters.

Andrew G.L. McNaughton Fonds

  • CA MUA MG 3071
  • Fonds
  • 1907-1963

Fonds consists of papers covering McNaughton’s years as a student and instructor at McGill, his army work during the first years of World War II, and his involvement in Canadian-American relations in the early 1960s. Materials from his McGill years include student lecture notes on electrical measurements (1907) and mechanics (1908-1909), a copy of his M.Sc. thesis on the dielectric strength of air (1912), and two talks given to the McGill Electrical Club on high voltage (1912) and on air as an insulator (1913). Six files of notes, drafts, charts and some correspondence document McNaughton's publications and inventions in the field of electrical insulation and transformers between 1912 and 1914.

Apart from C.O.T.C. lectures in artillery (1913), most of McNaughton's military papers date from 1939 to 1943. They consist entirely of typescript, printed reports and manuals by McNaughton on artillery and ballistics. Canadian-American relations are the subject of McNaughton's address to the Royal Canadian Institute on the St. Lawrence Seaway (1961). Also found in the fonds is a reprint of his article in the International Journal (1962-1963) on the proposed Columbia River Treaty.

William George Watson Fonds

  • CA MUA MG 4281
  • Fonds
  • 1973-2010

The fonds is composed of correspondence; course material; drafts of articles, books and other works; financial and judicial records, such as benefits statements or contracts; material written for public addresses, such as speeches or notes; photographs of Mr Watson; and a short section focusing its attention on the various appointments he had. This fonds is particularly interesting for the shear amount of course material that one can find here. Indeed, it composes a good third of the entire volume of this fonds and spans 20 courses over 40 years of teaching.

While attempting to give a complete look at William Watson’s life, the fonds is distributed into the following 5 series:
A. Biographical records
B. Professional records
C. Distinctions
D. Correspondence
E. Graphical material

William Tees Curran Fonds

  • CA MUA MG 4299
  • Fonds
  • 1921-1962

The fonds consist mainly of correspondence and shareholder reports. The development of Ungava Miners & Traders Limited is well documented in Curran's letters to the Cassards. The letters do not discuss the topic of geology from a scientific perspective, but instead illustrate the development of the mining industry and also provide a good account of what it would have been like to expand a business in early 20th century Canada.

Muse Entertainment Fonds

  • CA MUA MG 4304
  • Fonds
  • approximately 1996-2009

The fonds consists of records created and accumulated in the course of film and television production activities. It provides an integrated and holistic view of executive, creative and operational areas at Muse and its affiliates. The material is particularly strong in documents relating to the legal, financing, and management aspects of the industry, revealing the behind the-scenes requirements for sustainable and commercially-successful production. This depth of administrative records provides a significant complement to the creative materials generally found in archival film holdings. The materials serve to illustrate the economic impact of cultural industries on communities, including business, labour, and suppliers, as well as talent. They also document the various government incentive programs from the perspective of theproducer.

While the focus in making the archival selection has been on executive and production records, the fonds also contains a broad sampling of technical, craft and creative activities. It includes examples of script development, casting, locations, wardrobe, continuity, shooting and production logistics, promotion, and distribution. Scripts for all Muse productions are included. From the perspective of content development, Muse productions have included numerous productions based or derived from real life stories, including Roch Thériault, Nancy Eaton, Jane Doe, Jerri Nielsen, Rudy Guiliani, and Victor Davis. There are also examples of productions related to musical performers the Monkees, and Ricky Nelson.

The fonds documents the work of numerous Canadian directors, including Anne Wheeler, Jerry Ciccoritti, Bruce McDonald, Gary Yates, Holly Dale, Christian Duguay, Roger Spottiswoode, Gary Burns, Sturla Gunnarsson, John L’Ecuyer, as well as international directors such as Darren Aronofsky.

The audio-visual materials cover completed, as-released and as-broadcast productions in professional formats (usually masters on Digital Beta) for domestic and international versions. Selected production materials have also been retained, particularly with a view to providing examples of production processes and creative decisions.

The audio-visual programs provide a strong archival record of successful prime-time television content produced by a Canadian company, and viewed both domestically and internationally.

The date range covers the establishment of Muse in 1998, including some legacy productions from Pebblehut, through to 2007.
