This series consists of personal materials collected by William Feindel, many of which relate to his family. Among the materials are letters, greeting cards, schoolwork from his time as a student, awards, and personal photographs and portraits. Also included are souvenirs and artwork, as well as publications that were part of his personal library.

This series contains personal and family records of the McConnells from 1898-ca1970.

Included in the records are copies of the McConnell family tree, household and property expenses (e.g. receipts and bills from landscaping companies, clothing and household furnishings retailers, employee pay stubs, and lists of household costs), a guestbook from Saran Chai, photographs of family vacations at Saran Chai and the McConnells’ Golden Wedding anniversary, individual portraits or scenes of J.W. and Lily McConnell and friends, films of McConnell family vacations in Canada and trip to England in the late 1930s), material from special events such as the wedding of Kathleen McConnell to Peter Laing, additional personal mementos such as passports and McConnell’s Hymnary, and Christmas cards.

This series contains personal and family records of various kinds. Examples include correspondence, school and university study notes, official and unofficial documents, financial records, and photographs.

This series consists of H. Rocke Robertson’s private life, documented in a series of correspondence with his father, Harold Bruce Robertson, Justice of Appeal, British Columbia; his Uncle, Dr. Edward M. Eberts, known as Uncle Ted; his brothers, Alexander Bruce Robertson, known as Bruce and Alan McGregor Robertson; and his sister, Ethel Marian Robertson, known as Marian, 1915 1926, 1962-1979 (Container 4, Files 85, 89; Container 3, Files 60, 63), as well as personal papers which include Robertson’s birth certificate, expired passports, and CVs 1912 1978, 1996 (Container 4, Files 83 84; Container 19, File 267 . Files pertaining to Robertson’s father’s role on the Court of Appeal of British Columbia are also included, 1943 (Container 20, File 285-286) as are documents recognizing Robertson’s acts of kindness in his personal life including one such incident where he exchanged his first class seat on Trans Canada Airlines for the coach seat of a sick child, 1963 (Container 1, File 24).

Of particular interest are the correspondence files photos, and news clippings in the form of a scrapbook, which circulated between Robertson’s father, his Uncle Ted Eberts, and Robertson discussing strategic plans for his career path, marriage, and financial situation, 1935-1936 (Container 4, File 91). Robertson also maintained a regular correspondence with his brother, Bruce, a lawyer in British Columbia, from whom he sought advice on such matters as the McGill Daily Affair and the Stanley Gray Dismissal, among more personal subject matters, 1939-1969, 1939-1989 (Container 8, File 165; (Container 11, File 194 ). Other personal correspondence consists of birthday cards, congratulatory cards for his many achievements, and letters from Family members and friends, 1953, 1955-1986, 1994-1997 (Container 4, File 94; Container 3, Files 61-62, 64-66, 68, 70; Container 8, File 173). Also of note is a letter from his neighbour James or “Jasper” Cross, in which Cross thanks Robertson for greeting him on his return from captivity during the FLQ crisis while congratulating Robertson on his wise decision to move to Ontario due to the perceived dangers to prominent Anglophones in Quebec (Container 3,
File 66).

This series also contains documents pertaining to Robertson’s properties, for example, photos of his numerous private residences, 1956 1971, 2001 (Container 4, Files 93, 111); information on the sale of “Struan”, his retirement home; as well as information on his investments and donations, including the division of his estate and chattels amongst family members, 1948-1998 (Container 3, Files 71-77). Personal letters received during his principalship discuss topics such as his mother’s declining health as well as letters from his nieces and nephews that recount such events as the loss of Toni Robertson’s baby teeth, 1962-1966 (Container 3, Files 60, 69). These letters reflect the space that Robertson reserved for his family, even during times of professional stress and turbulence.

His interest in his lineage is evident through files that document his family’s genealogy, including a detailed family tree, 1984-1994 (Container 4, Files 82, 86). This series contains documents in diverse formats, such as photos, travel brochures, and postcards from a family trip to Europe in 1958 (Container 4, Files 81, 89), as well as other vacations with friends and family (Container 15, Files 226 228, 232). Additional correspondence files, newspaper clippings, in the form of wedding announcements, and photographs pertain to family related events such as Robertson’s courtship and marriage to Beatrice Rosyln, 1935-1936 (Container 4, File 91), and to the celebration of the Robertsons’ Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary 1987 Container 2, File 43). Robertson’s courtship was largely documented through letters that circulated between his Uncle Ted, his father, and Thomas Arnold, Rolly’s father.

Several files, including health notes and medical charts on Robertson and his wife that were compiled by caregivers, 1997-1998 (Container 2, File 44), condolence letters and cards on the death of H. Rocke Robertson, 1998 (Container 2, File 45; Container 8, File 174), H. Rocke Robertson’s obituary, 1998 (Container 3, File 78), and memorial service, 1998 (Container 1, File 14) were added to the archives by Stuart Robertson following H. Rocke Robertson’s death.

Robertson’s interest in rare English dictionaries and his penchant for collecting are reflected in his personal library of dictionaries, numbering almost 500, which he donated to the University of British Columbia, 1986-1994 (Container 2, Files 38-40). Numerous articles and correspondence files reinforce his interest in this subject, 1976-1989, 1981, 1969-1991 (Container 2, Files 41, 58; Container 8, File 168). In particular, letters to his friend, Geoffrey Keynes, a William Blake Scholar and collector, suggest that Keynes may have been the stimulus for Robertson’ interest in collecting, 1989-1994 (Container 4, File 82). His membership in the Osler Society and the H. Rocke Robertson Rare Book Room in McGill’s Osler Library which houses Robertson’s rare book donation to McGill, coupled with conferences he attended on the history of medicine signify his interest in this topic, 1970-1998, 1927-2005, 1979 (Container 1, Files 15-18, 20; Container 3, Files 1/80 3/80; (Container 8, File 159). Robertson’s interest in the creative arts is reflected through the plethora of theatre and opera brochures and pamphlets that he preserved 1965-1983 (Container 15, File 231).

The personal and family series consist of files related to Herman "Jackrabbit" Smith Johannsen as well as Alice Johannsen's private papers.
Herman "Jackrabbit" Smith Johannsen files (Files 1-35) date from 1884 to 1987 and include honorary degrees, awards, newspaper clippings, newsletters, ski related files such as Ski Marathon, Ski Museum, and publications by Jackrabbit- a collection of small "Skiers' Books" and "Le systeme a deux cires Jackrabbit pour ski de fond". Files related to Norway consist of notes, photographs, correspondence and newspaper clippings. Part of the series is correspondence related to "Jackrabbit" such as incoming handwritten letters, birthday cards to "Jackrabbit", handwritten letters in Norwegian to Alice and her sister Peggy from "Jackrabbit" (some in Norwegian), handwritten and typed letters to "Jackrabbit" in Norwegian from Alice and and relatives in Norway, some photographs, and fan mail. Letters from relatives in Norway to Alice and other family correspondence is almost entirely handwritten.

Black and white and color photographs as well as some negatives (Files 36-48) ranging from 1913-1991, consists of pictures of "Jackrabbit", Alice, friends and family. Also included are a few black & white photographs of Ron Turnham.

Slides in color taken by Alice Johannsen deal mostly with her father whether it is the Ski Marathon, trips to Norway, or Jackrabbit's other events. These slides span from 1956 to 1988 (Files 718-735, 738). There are also slides of Alice in Mont Tremblant in 1964 (File 736), and slides of Alice and Ron Turnham during the Royal Visit in 1959 (File 737).

Alice Johannsen's daily diaries and appointment books are handwritten and date from 1935 to 1988 (Files 49-55).

Files related to Alice Johannsen's Beaconsfield residence and its construction span from 1948 to 1982 (Files 56-58). Files related to household (handwritten Christmas lists) date from 1941 to 1980 9Files 59-61). Files related to household (handwritten Christmas lists) date from 1941 to 1980 (Files 59-61). Files documenting Alice's hobbies and interests, such as budgies, designs, and souvenirs from Expo 1967 range from 1946 to 1985 (Files 62-66).

Personal papers range from 1911 to 1990 and include passports, birth certificate, ration books and invitation to the White House from Mrs. Kennedy (Files 71, 78-79). Present also is Alice's curriculum vitae, biography, correspondence regarding jobs not taken spanning from 1935 to 1989 (Files 81-83), wedding gifts correspondence and marriage articles from the years 1940 to 1946 (Files 81-68), Ron Turnham's curriculum vitae and will from 1975 to 1978 (Files 69-70). There are also files containing business cards, electoral lists from Mont St. Hilaire, driver's license, pension and health plan, and charitable contributions dating between 1971 and 1991 (Files 72-77).

Included in the series also are newspaper clippings about Alice and Alice's brother Robert Johannsen from the Years between 1937 and 1984 (Files 84-85).

Alice's involvement in various societies and organizations (The James McGill Society, Women's Associates of McGill, Sigma Xi, Lake Placid Historical Society, Adirondack Trail Improvement Society, Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing, The Viking Ski Club, Canadian Scandinavian Foundation) dates from 1925 to 1990 (Files 80, 86-101).

Alice's interest in traveling is shown in files with her handwritten reflections on trip to Norway, Switzerland, London, Grand Canyon and others (Files 102-115). These files date between 1935 and 1986. An interesting scrapbook from a tour to Norway and Sweden organized by Alice in 1938 is to be found in file 104.

Large part of this series form correspondence files ranging from 1915 to 1991. This is mostly personal correspondence with family and friends, and a small portion of official correspondence. The official correspondence deals mainly with subjects regarding "Jackrabbit", and also includes letters regarding Alice's entry in Who is Who in America, correspondence with Prime Minister P. E. Trudeau and McGill Alumni (Files 118-129). Some correspondence files also contain outgoing letters and notes by Alice, and photographs. Included are handwritten letters, some of which are in Norwegian, between Alice's mother and father and herself.

Alice's passion for writing is documented in several files dating between 1936 and 1954, containing mostly handwritten article and song drafts, notes and correspondence (Files 117, 130-144).

An important part of Alice Johannsen's personal series are files documenting her academic training. This consists mostly of her course notes and textbooks from Newark Museum Apprenticeship, correspondence, Carnegie scholarship documents, traveling exhibition notes, draft for British Museum Diploma Thesis, an original Bachelor of Science Diploma from McGill University, awards and honorary degrees. These files date from the years 1928 to 1981 (Files 145-169).

This series contains documents related to Noel Noel-Buxton's personal life and financial transactions, created between roughly 1869 and 1948. Includes material related to Buxton's early education, dental health, and the Noel-Buxton Foundation. Also includes photographs and a drawn portrait of Buxton.

The arrangement of the series reflects the structure of the fonds when it was described by McGill archivists. This may reflect the original order or may be an arrangement that was introduced by Professor H. N. Fieldhouse, who acquired the fonds for McGill and spent many years conducting research in it. 

This series consists of Thesen’s work as well as other collections such as correspondence, notes, and essay drafts. The date of the files range from 1969 to 1989. The production of the records appears to be for the purpose of preparation for publication. Many of the files in the record are annotated or edited in some way, assumed by Thesen herself. The files are loosely collected by poem series, although other files are frequently inserted. The correspondence cover areas including the publishing of either poetry, essays, or reviews of other writing.

This series contains letters, notebooks, teaching materials, and other ephemeral records that Samuel collected during the course of his work and life. It consists of correspondence, including rejection letters (Container 7, Files 17 and 24), published materials that do not reflect a direct research process, and notebooks used by Samuel. It also includes personal materials such as an astrological birth chart (Container 7, File 31), teaching materials (Container 7, Files 20-23). Series also includes notes on other writers’ drafts (Container 7, Files 26 and 28).
