Jean-Baptiste-René Hertel de Rouville fonds

Fonds consists primarily of correspondence between Hertel de Rouville and members of the Canadian government, including Chief Secretary of Lower Canada Sir Thomas William Clinton Murdoch (1809-1891) and Governors General Lord Gosford and Charles Bagot, regarding financial losses he incurred during the rebellions of 1837, 1838, and 1839, and half-pay claims dating from his time as captain of the Canadian Voltigeurs during the War of 1812. Also included are five envelopes with wax seals intact.

Research trips

This series consists of 23 volumes and 6 files focusing on travel, research, and expedition activities conducted during Casey Wood's ornithological research trips from 1920-1937, including periodical and newspaper publications written by Wood during this time. This series consists of manuscripts and articles relating to letters to friends and family providing accounts of his travels, clippings, photographs, printed ephemera, photostats, artwork, and feathers from John III. Some of the volumes contain manuscripts, notes, and/or photostats, while others are scrapbooks containing multiple record types seemingly curated, arranged and mounted by Wood or as directed by him.
Within this series are 209 incoming and outgoing correspondence including letters, notes and cards. Individuals in correspondence with Wood include Cora Raymond, G. R. Lomer, E. V. Sanderson, Sir George Perley, Sir Charles Major, H. Kirke Swann, Edith Hayes, Emma Shearer Wood, W. E. Wait, Sun Engraving Co., Taylor and Francis, Bitty and Seaborne Ltd., Stuart Baker, G. M. Henry, and Allan Brooks. Other individuals present in this series include Mabel Satterlee, L. F. Struthers, W. J. Belcher, J. Sutton, G. M. Henry, F. Marjorie Fyfe, J. C. Harrison, Alexander Wetmore, and Dr. Andreas Nell.

This subseries consists of other research, writing, and correspondence files related to Wood's research and writing activities (1852-1925), writings of others assisting in Wood’s research projects or written about Wood (1936-1943), and volumes containing multiple publications by Casey Wood from 1852-1943, but predominantly 1920-1938. Some of these volumes include writings of other authors as well. The subseries is composed mostly of publications, manuscripts, and correspondence, along with photographs, clippings, book dust covers, feathers from John III, and printed materials pertaining largely to ornithology, falconry, and Wood's research.
Included in this subseries are 661 incoming and outgoing correspondence (1914, 1927, 1933-1940) including letters, postcards, and telegrams. There is business correspondence, 1792-1800, with letters from among others Alexander Mackenzie, Joseph Frobisher, Alexander Henry, Simon Fraser and Roderick Mackenzie. There are also minutes and resolutions of the Executors of McTavish in a bound volume; and a contemporary copy of the minutes of the executors of his will, 1805.

Correspondence 1921-1931 concerning Simon McTavish; official copies of legal documents including estate inventories, lawsuits over the McTavish estate, and Simon McTavish’s will; notes for Baylis’ study of McTavish; numerous petitions and newspaper clippings on the state of the McTavish monument and tomb (Peel St., Montreal), and a typescript of his text concerning Simon McTavish. Also two letters from Ignatius Donnelly, 1899, and a letter 1895, from J. Middleton to John Doyle about 19th century gardening in Montreal and the funeral of Judge James Reid.

Frobisher's papers comprise a letterbook of the North-West Co. containing copies of letters written by Frobisher from April 1787 to October 1788, two original letters to Simon McTavish, 1796, and one from him, 1787, business and legal documents, largely concerning the estate of James McGill, 1810-1834, and a diary, 1806-1810, mostly a record of where he dined.

A collection of documents from the life of Simon McTavish including a letter to his creditors and a series of legal opinions on the estate of Simon and William McGillivray. Documents' informational value is largely financial in nature.

Scrapbooks

This series consists of 14 scrapbook volumes and files of material collected by Wood that were of interest to him either professionally or personally, dated between 1887-1955, but predominately 1926-1941. The scrapbooks and files contain newspaper and periodical clippings, correspondence, printed ephemera, photographs, postcards, palm leaf manuscripts, prints, paintings and other artwork, manuscripts, bookplates, place cards, and textile badges. There are also a few items within the volumes relating to Wood’s research trips and minor writings.
Overall topics within the series include ornithology, Wood’s parrot John III, zoology, naturalists, current events (1927-1941), poems, politics and war, British culture and people, health, obituaries, education, tourism, science and medical research, McGill Library and other institution collections, bird sanctuaries, and bird, ancient, and medieval artwork.
Printed ephemera from Wood’s travels include invitations, programs, brochures, tickets, visitation membership cards, business cards, etc.. There are two volumes (1925-1932) with Saturday Evening Post articles written by Hal G. Evarts, Stewart E. White, David Newell, Bozeman Bulger, Lord William Percy, Donald R. Dickey, and others.
There are 63 incoming and outgoing correspondence, including letters, notes, cards and telegrams. Letter to creditors

File contains a letter written by Simon McGillivray to his creditors of the various firms wherein he was a partner. McGillivray presents the worth of several of his assets in an attempt to ease the creditors and assure them that the Deed he has send will be honoured if they sign it.
