Correspondence 1921-1931 concerning Simon McTavish; official copies of legal documents including estate inventories, lawsuits over the McTavish estate, and Simon McTavish’s will; notes for Baylis’ study of McTavish; numerous petitions and newspaper clippings on the state of the McTavish monument and tomb (Peel St., Montreal), and a typescript of his text concerning Simon McTavish. Also two letters from Ignatius Donnelly, 1899, and a letter 1895, from J. Middleton to John Doyle about 19th century gardening in Montreal and the funeral of Judge James Reid.

Library collections

This series consists of 399 incoming and outgoing letters and postcards, administrative and financial papers, catalogue lists, bookplates, and manuscripts pertaining to collection development and other library-related activities for the Emma Shearer Wood and Blacker Libraries from 1918-1941. The correspondence relates directly to collection development of these libraries from 1921-1941; however, the years 1931 and 1933 are not present.
Correspondence is primarily between Casey Wood and other individuals, such as Gerhard R. Lomer, Lilian Bates, Elizabeth Abbott, J. H. Fleming, McGill’s Order Department, Henry Mousley, V. C. Wynne Edwards, Margaret Hibbard, Otto Kals, and A. P. S. Glassco, as well as, book dealers, such as Messrs. Wheldon and Wesley and Messrs Bernard Quaritch, Ltd.. Other correspondence is also present between other individuals relating to McGill University Library collections including those donating materials to the libraries and others affiliated with Wood.
Subjects within the collection often concern financial and administrative information, purchases or material requests relating to ornithology, falconry, zoology, and Wood’s research and writing. Within the catalogue lists and manuscripts for the libraries, some relate specifically to medieval, medieval Persian, and fifteenth-century manuscripts. Additionally, this series also includes clippings and photographs exchanged between Wood and Library staff.
Notably, one volume within this series is dedicated to the evolution of the Emma Shearer Wood Library bookplate with the original drawing designed by United States government engraver G. F. C. Smillie and 7 other versions of the bookplates between 1918-1922. The later bookplate was by Bumpus of London designed by M. P. Barrett.

Tobin's papers consist of a scrapbook and photo album containing programmes, menus and newspaper clippings concerning the "King Cook" celebrations, 1911-1927, newspaper obituaries and photographs of Medical Faculty professors, programmes for social events of the Medical Society, Pharmaceutical Society and the McGill Employees Association (of which Tobin was secretary) and letters of recommendation from the Medical Students Society, 1921-1931.

Abbott's papers reflect her family background, education and private life, as well as her research and publications on medical history. There are no materials relating to her work as a pathologist. Abbott's family background is documented by a printed history (1931) of St. Matthew's, Grenville, of which Joseph Abbott was the first rector, and glass negative views of the family home in St. Andrew's. Records of her education comprise notebooks (1886-1890) for courses at McGill in classics, philosophy, English literature, and science, her graduation photograph, and a photocopy of her address as Donalda Valedictorian in 1890. Private records include diaries (1930-1940), a commonplace-book (1929-1938), and a bundle of notes, clippings, poems, letters and invitations. Three versions of her autobiography survive: the finished "Autobiographical sketch" of 1928 (photocopy), part of an undated autobiography, and a brief autobiographical note. Records of Abbott's historical research and publications include extensive notes on the history of medicine in Québec as well as papers relating to the publication of her History. Other files contain notes on the admission of women to McGill and other universities, the establishment of the Medical Museum, the amalgamation of the medical faculties of Bishop's and McGill with some administrative records of the medical faculty. Dr. Abbott's professional correspondence is represented only by a file on the Federation of Canadian Medical Women, 1938.

Some recollections of a long life.

This subseries focuses on the unpublished memoir of Casey A. Wood, which consists of manuscripts, typescripts, notes, research project notes and publications, correspondence (1888-1939), photographs, clippings and printed material, and journals (1891, 1930-1931) from approximately 1850-1939. Wood had assistance from family members, professional connections, and friends to compile his biographical information for the memoir. Wood was living in Rome during the mid- to late-1930s, so much of the Canadian research was conducted by family members Samuel Casey Wood III, Alan Wood, and Edith Hayes. There is correspondence between Wood and his family on the progress of the memoir, their family, and personal lives. The subseries consists of approximately 110 letters and 1 telegram with additional correspondence, clippings, and other materials integrated into the memoir’s manuscript and typescripts.

Within the subseries' photographs are images of Dr. Thomas Woodruff, Emma Shearer Wood, Casey Wood, Marjorie Fyfe, James Shearer, Eliza Shearer, Dr. Richmond, Dr. Ridgway, other family members and friends, and from research trips. Places related to Wood’s life mentioned in this subseries include the United States, Canada, Germany, Sri Lanka, England, Italy, Ethiopia, Vienna, France, Afghanistan, British Guiana, Australia, Fiji, McGill and Emma Shearer Wood Libraries, Bishops’ College, Western General Hospital, Stanford University, and the Chicago Ophthalmological Society.

Research trips

This series consists of 23 volumes and 6 files focusing on travel, research, and expedition activities conducted during Casey Wood's ornithological research trips from 1920-1937, including periodical and newspaper publications written by Wood during this time. This series consists of manuscripts and articles relating to letters to friends and family providing accounts of his travels, clippings, photographs, printed ephemera, photostats, artwork, and feathers from John III. Some of the volumes contain manuscripts, notes, and/or photostats, while others are scrapbooks containing multiple record types seemingly curated, arranged and mounted by Wood or as directed by him.
Within this series are 209 incoming and outgoing correspondence including letters, notes and cards. Individuals in correspondence with Wood include Cora Raymond, G. R. Lomer, E. V. Sanderson, Sir George Perley, Sir Charles Major, H. Kirke Swann, Edith Hayes, Emma Shearer Wood, W. E. Wait, Sun Engraving Co., Taylor and Francis, Bitty and Seaborne Ltd., Stuart Baker, G. M. Francis Alexander Carron Scrimger Fonds

Scrimger's papers mainly concern his war service. His brief diary of the Ypres campaign, 1915, is supplemented by signals and military messages on troop movements and medical matters; Scrimger sometimes used the signal forms for additional diary entries. There are also a handful of letters and cables of congratulation on his V.C., certificates of service, newsclippings, and printed souvenirs. The remainder of these papers consist of obituary notices and tributes. Some are pasted into Scrimger's notebook of Professor Bier's clinic, Berlin, 1910.

Fonds consists of pamphlet entitled, “What to Eat to be Healthy” (Toronto: Canadian Medical Association and Canadian Life Insurance Officers Association, 1937), authored by Tisdall. Fonds also includes: typed letter signed from J. P. Crozer Griffith to Tisdall, Feb. 10, 1923, concerning a case on which Tisdall had consulted Griffith; autographed letter signed from Mrs. J. B. Gregory and Eliza J. Gregory, Aug. 2, 1920, agreeing to lease rental property to Tisdall; and autographed receipt signed from Mrs. J. B. Gregory acknowledging receipt of Tisdall’s rental payments.

William Howard Pugsley Fonds

Fonds concerns Pugsley’s contacts with McGill economics professors during his senior year and as a recent graduate, and his enthusiasm for McGill sports.

His correspondence comprises a letter from Prof. J.P. Day, 1934, responding to Pugsley's views on the roles of government and the banks in the extension of credit, and two letters from Stephen Leacock, one, 1934, commending a review-article by Pugsley, the second, 1935, declining an invitation to give an address. A number of clippings from the McGill Daily and city newspapers record McGill sports events, ca 1932. Two reels of film provide campus views, interior views of classrooms, and sport events at McGill.
Also includes notes and examinations for Economics classes from his student years.
