Saint Helen's Island Collection

Collection consists of three items relating to Saint Helen's Island (Île Sainte-Hélène), located southeast of the Island of Montreal in the Saint Lawrence River. The items relate to the island's military installations, built as defenses for the city of Montreal as a result of the War of 1812 and used as a munitions depot for the British Army and later a garrison, arsenal, and military prison operated by the Canadian Army. Items include a manuscript entitled, "Military Defences. St. Helen's Island - Barons of Longeuil," written by Charles Walkem, August, 1873; "Plan of Isle St. Helens," an undated map on linen paper, with a key pointing out the military installations; and "The Fort, St. Helen's Island," a 4-page pamphlet containing schematics and descriptions of the island's fort as well as a history of the island dating from 1611 to the 1960s. The pamphlet cover photograph features a soldier of the Royal Artillery, Saint Helen's Island Fort, circa 1865. Part of the manuscript document also deals with the hereditary Barony of Longueuil.

Family letters, 1939-1941

File consists of letters, articles, and printed ephemera. Many of the letters date between 1939 and 1941, during the Second World War. Many letters in English and Norwegian are from Herman Smith- Johannsen's son Bob to his parents or uncle Otto. Also include outgoing letters by Herman to his son and others. Printed ephemera includes the order of the memorial service for Herman Smith-Johannsen.

Miscellaneous McGill ephemera, 1960-1969

This file contains miscellaneous internal and student documents, including five publications forms, library accession records (1961-1985); flyer for worker's league public meeting "There is no peace in Vietnam" held at the McGill Student Union (10 February ca. 1973-1974); flyer for a demonstration against Nixon and the Vietnam War (13 May ca. 1969-1974); letter to Principal H. Rocke Robertson and Vice-Principal Michael K. Oliver opposing the hiring of Nayanto Nath Chaudhuri from Comité pour les Droits Democratiques du Peuple (C.D.D.P.) (December 1969); memo about a French Canada Studies Programme meeting with some handwritten notes on the back (2 November 1967).
