Correspondence/Domestic

Sub-series includes all of Dr. Penfield's "correspondence-domestic", or personal correspondence, which was taken from his office at the Montreal Neurological Institute. This sub-series includes material which Dr. Penfield had collected before arriving at McGill in 1928. In particular, it includes correspondence between Dr. Penfield and his wife, Helen Kermott Penfield.

Introduction to the literature of vertebrate zoology

This subseries consists of 11 volumes, correspondence files, and a box of notecards dated from 1921-1956 relating to Wood's publication “An Introduction to the Literature of Vertebrate Zoology” published in 1931 and collection development within the Emma Shearer Wood and Blacker Libraries at McGill University. The volumes and files contain correspondence, handwritten and typed annotated manuscripts, proof sheets, the publication, notecards listing recipients of the publication, prints, printed ephemera, clippings, financial and administrative records, book reviews, and McGill Library catalogue listings related to the works within “An Introduction to the Literature of Vertebrate Zoology.” Additional professional projects are also represented in the subseries including “Coloured Plates of the Birds of Ceylon,” the Passing of John III, and Wood’s translation of Benevenutus Grassus’ de Oculis.
There are 1313 incoming and outgoing correspondence letters, telegrams, and cards; the largest volume in the collection. The correspondents are located internationally and include public, academic, government, and army libraries; museums, clubs and societies, literary journals, publishers, etc.. This sub-series consists of records generated by Wilder Penfield as Director of the Montreal Neurological Institute. This consists primarily of correspondence and reports about teaching curricula, budgetary information, maintenance, staff concerns, and general university affairs created through his activities with the administration of McGill University (Deans of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, Office of the Comptroller/Bursar, Presidents of the University, etc.).

Montreal Star

This subseries contains records related to J.W. McConnell’s involvement in the Montreal Star, from between 1925 and 1971.

Material in this subseries includes federal and provincial income tax statements and annual statements, memos and correspondence regarding tax and editorial content (specifically political events and discourse such as the arrest of Mayor Camillien Houde in 1940 and the rise of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and F. R. Scott in Canadian politics), and minute books of the executive.
