This subseries contains documentation related to conferences, workshops, and seminars held at various institutions, including at the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) and McGill University. Also included are photographs and slides related to some of these events.

Conference papers and lectures

The largest and most comprehensive series is conference papers and lectures with most of the presentations taking place in Canada, Australia and the United States, many with separate speech and shorter slide summaries. The subjects covered include AIDS, medical ethics, and euthanasia, and reflect the range of Somerville’s interest in ethical issues.

Personality/family matters

The personal matters/family series is the most varied one, documenting family life through correspondence and photographs and personal life through awards and honours from both Canada and Australia. Also there are records reflecting her interest in cats and the art community, particularly the artist Jacques Deshaies.

The fonds chiefly reflects the public role of Margaret Somerville through the dissemination of her ideas on ethical issues through conferences, lectures, various publications, teaching activities, consults and research with some records concerning her family and personal life. Somerville, Margaret A.

General filing materials

This series consists of general filing materials, the bulk of which is dated 2009-2016, and includes correspondence, Quebec Bar Association Membership, reference letters, royalty statements, and research notes for The Ethical Canary. These files are no longer integrated into particular series due to changes in office management.

H. Rocke Robertson Fonds

The fonds document H. Rocke Robertson’s personal and family life, including his early education, his athletic abilities, his experiences during WWII in Britain, Sicily, and Italy, as well as some aspects of his professional life, including articles, speeches, and correspondence on his activities as a surgeon, surgeon in chief, professor of surgery, and as McGill’s principal, inclusive 1912-1998. In particular, his tenure as McGill’s principal is characterized by records in diverse formats such as personal diaries, correspondence files, newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, and related ephemera reflecting his administrative duties, including the changes he implemented at McGill, as well as his efforts to cope with radical student behaviour and the Quebec government’s unwillingness to provide McGill with much needed financial assistance. Robertson’s retirement activities are also reflected in the records. Also included are numerous documents that reveal his interest in rare English dictionaries, rare books, and the history of medicine, in particular the history of surgical techniques. The fonds consist of 18 boxes with some files arranged into subject categories while others have a chronological arrangement scheme.
