The caption reads: "This is a variety in the Hooded Snakes of Hindostan; in which Mr. Russell remarks are many slight variations both in form and color. Copied J Forbes 1813." An additional annotation in pencil by Henry Mousley reads: "Naia tripudians imm.?"

The Nest of the Bottle Sparrow

Item consists of a colour drawing of a sparrow poised on a gum arabic tree branch next to a butterfly (eggfly or blue moon butterfly) in flight, with identification and description in pen in contemporary hand: "The Nest of the Bottle Sparrow on a Branch of the Baubul Tree with the Purpled Eyed Butterfly." Additional later pencil notes provide additional identification for the butterfly, "Hypolimnas bolina Linn [India])," and indicate that the image corresponds to Forbes's Oriental Memoirs, 1813, volume 1, page 48. Also contains additional annotations by Henry Mousley with citations and speculation as to the origin of the butterfly (New Zealand).

An additional annotation in pencil by Henry Mousley identifies the species as: "Distira jerdonii."

An additional pencil annotation by Henry Mousley identifies the species of snake as "Tropidonotus stolatus (var.)" The drawing is signed by James Forbes and dated 1818.

The caption identifies the species as a "Cobra Minelle," which is described in the Oriental Memoirs, volume 1, chapter 3, as "the smallest, and most dangerous; the bite occasions a speedy and painful death. They are of a brown colour, speckled with black and white, though at a distance not easily distinguished from the ground on which they move." An additional pencil annotation by Henry Mousley identifies the species as "Tropidonotus stolatus."

Anguis

Item consists of a colour drawing of a snake. The caption identifies the species as "Anguis." The rest of the caption reads: "called by the Natives Hoogli-pattee. A Fowl bitten in the thigh by this Reptile, expired in five minutes." An additional pencil annotation by Henry Mousley identifies the species as "Hydrophis schistosus" (beaked sea snake).
