This collection reflects Henry S. Significant correspondents include Louis-Joseph Papineau, Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine, Jacob Dewitt, François-Antoine Larocque (of Laroque and Bernard), Joseph Perreault, and Edmund Bailey O’Callaghan. There is also a partial manuscript on Canadian history and pages from a scrapbook, both dating from the 1830s.

James Forbes Zoological Drawings

  • CA RBD MSG BW003
  • Collection
  • between approximately 1800 and 1818

Collection consists of 57 illustrations of birds, eggs, snakes, and plants by James Forbes chiefly to illustrate his work "Oriental Memoirs," published in four volumes between 1813 and 1815. The majority of the illustrations are either engraved or hand-drawn and then coloured, and have been cut out and mounted on paper. In many cases, a background has been drawn in and coloured or partially coloured. Approximately thirty of the images depict tropical birds, many from the Indian subcontinent, as well as some from Brazil and Australia. A number of these drawings also feature insects, particularly butterflies, and trees and flowers. Fifteen drawings depict bird eggs, including many of forest birds. The images generally contain captions by Forbes or a contemporary, identifying the subject of the drawing. Some birds are unidentified. Numerous drawings also contain species identifications or annotations in pencil by Henry Mousely, librarian of the Blacker Wood Library at McGill University during the 1920s and 1930s. These drawings are tentatively dated to approximately 1811. A note on one drawing indicates that it was originally based on drawings created during Forbes's voyages during the 1780s, then recopied in 1811. Items 44 through 57 depict snakes and reptiles and are tentatively dated to between approximately 1811 and 1818, based on a small number of drawings which are signed and dated. Many of these drawings of snakes and reptiles feature as plates in Patrick Russell's "A Continuation of an Account of Indian Serpents: Containing Descriptions and Figures, from Specimens and Drawings" (1801).

James Morrison papers

  • CA RBD MSG 1310
  • Collection
  • 18 September 1651 - approximately 1912

The James Morrison papers are a collection of documents chiefly related to James Morrison's activities as a trader and merchant in Montreal. The papers also include some material related to Morrison's family, including legal documents and genealogical research conducted by his descendents. The documents in the James Morrison papers cover a period beginning 18 September 1651 and ending in approximately 1912, but focusing primarily on 1767 through 1800. The fonds represents Morrison's business dealings in Quebec, Ontario, the northern United States, and England, as well as his family life in Montreal and connections with relatives in Baltimore, Ontario, and Jamaica.

The papers are arranged into three series: 1 - Journals, 2 - Correspondence, and 3 - Financial and legal records. Documents in these series include a bound journal, correspondence, contracts, deeds of ownership, power of attorney, birth and marriage certificates, bills of sale, invoices, accounts, descriptions of political and military events, and genealogical notes.

James Stanley Goddard Papers

  • CA RBD MSG 1244
  • Collection
  • 1767, after 1805?

The collection consists chiefly of a document written by Stanley Goddard detailing a 1766-1767 voyage by canoe from Michilimackinac up Lake Superior to the Mississippi. There is a docket title given on verso: "Copy of Mr. Goddard's Journal - 29th August 1767." These pages, ostensibly copied from Goddard's daily journal in his capacity as secretary to the detachment, describe a voyage under the command of Captain James Tute, with Goddard as second and secretary.

Appended to the journal pages there is a document entitled, "Return of such Western Indians as are now at this Post” (that is, the post at Michilimackinac). The document may have been created after 1805, because it appears to contain a reference to the Shawnee Prophet (Tenskwatawa, 1775-1836). The page includes a table of demographic information for Indigenous tribes, including numbers of men, women, children, and total population figures. The people enumerated include the Kickapoo (Kiikaapoa or Kiikaapoi); the "Sawkee" (Sauk, Sac, or oθaakiiwaki) and Meskwaki (Meshkwahkihaki); the Wyandot (or Wendat); Shawnees of "the Prophet's Band" and other bands of Shawnees (Shaawanwaki, Ša˙wano˙ki and Shaawanowi lenaweeki); Ottawa and Chippewa (Odaawaa or Odawa and Ojibwe); Muensee (mə́n'si·w); Delaware (or, Lenape); "Moravians" (probably Christian, or Moravian, Munsee); and Seneca-Cayuga (Guyohkohnyo or Gayogohó:no).
