Jefferson Lewis Collection

  • CA OSLER P190
  • Collection
  • [ca. 1860] – 1981; predominantly 1907-1981.

This collection is divided into material either by, or about, Wilder Graves Penfield. The material was collected by Lewis in order to write his biography. The fonds also includes materials associated with Mr. Lewis' writing of the biography.

The Penfield material is organized by family member, with the largest portion belonging to Wilder Penfield and his wife Helen Penfield. This material is largely personal in nature. It consists of originals and photocopies of diaries, as well as personal correspondence between Penfield and his wife, family photographs, and ephemera from a variety of social and professional events. There is also a small selection of personal correspondence between family members.

Lewis created drafts, revisions, letters concerning the development of the screenplay, and research material. Correspondence between Lewis and the family is contained in the material covering personal family matters.

John Howell Evans Collection

  • CA OSLER P072
  • Collection
  • 1887-1889

Collection contains over 700 prints of portraits, mostly English physicians of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but also pathological illustrations from the late 1860s to the mid-1920s. The collection includes papers, clippings and reprints associated with the portraits. The collection contains examples of various types of prints, including mezzotints, line, etchings, lithographs, and stipple. Approximately 56 of the finest mezzotints are framed and glazed. A large number of the prints are taken from such works as Pettigrew's Medical Portrait Gallery, Layland's Contemporary Medical Men, Kay's Edinburgh Portraits, and from the Gentleman's Magazine and the European Magazine. There are a number of early photographs of British medical men made by the London Stereoscopic Company. There are several bundles of portraits of foreign medical worthies, comprising quite a good representative collection of early prints. Many of these are taken from Sambucus' Icones (1603). The total number of foreign portraits is, however, quite small, and it seems obvious that the British portraits represent Mr. Evans's main interest. One bundle contains engravings of notorious quacks such as Valentine Greatrakes, Joshua Ward, and Chevalier Taylor. Apart from portraits, there are a few of the well-known subject prints. These include two or three of Teniers's pictures of barber-surgeons and quacks, a fine mezzotint of Rembrandt's Anatomy, the Siege of Warwick Lane, and some caricatures. There is also a set of the Vanity Fair cartoons of the 19th century medical men by "Spy" and "Ape", apparently complete and with accompanying biographical sketches.

  • Collection
  • 2009-2011

The McGill Group in Medical Genetics Oral Histories Collection documents the history of the McGill Group in Medical Genetics, active 1972 to 2009, through fourteen oral histories with the group's members. The Collection contains transcripts in English and in French translation of oral history interviews conducted with the members of the McGill Group in Medical Genetics between 2009 and 2011. The oral history interviews were held in the course of a larger project conducted by a group of researchers at McGill's School of Social Studies of Medicine to document the history of the group and its role in the development of the field of medical genetics in Canada more broadly. These researchers included Christopher Canning, Andrea Tone, George Weisz, and Alberto Cambrosio. The project received guidance from David Rosenblatt and funding from the Canada Research Chair Program in the Social History of Medicine. The fourteen interviews document the members' individual biographies and careers, as well as the history and development of the McGill Group in Medical Genetics during a transformative period in the field of medical genetics. The interviews are available as transcripts, created by Christopher Canning. French translations of the transcripts were also created by McGIll's Translation Services and are also made available. A large portion of the collection is concerned with the growth of the Medical Library at McGill. The textual material includes early library reports, surveys, information about library staff, finance, gifts, procedures, as well as information regarding the Osler Library and departmental building plans and renovations. The collection also includes correspondence, notes, photographs, and artifacts associated with 'McGill Medical Men' including: James "King" Cook, Robert Palmer Howard, William Wright, Robert Lea MacDonnell, Richard Lea MacDonnell, Herbert Stanley Birkett, and others. There are many reprints in the collection – some bound into volumes, and many that include signatures and written notes. The collection also includes photographs, scrapbooks, and glass lantern slides (some of which are from World War One), books, and theses. The Medical Library's accession records, index cards, and journal cards are also preserved in the collection, still housed in their original catalogue drawers (see Series 7). The collection includes various announcements, university calendars and directories related to the Faculty of Medicine, as well as communication, meeting minutes, and essays belonging to the McGill Medical Society (1884-1907), the McGill Reporting Society (1926-1951), and the Montreal Dermatological Society (1930-1951). Lastly, the collection includes miscellaneous textual materials related to McGill and the Faculty of Medicine, for instance McGill student attendance cards from 1828-1872 (with course name and professor details).
