Montreal High School and the High School for Girls Fonds

Most of this archive documents the High School for Girls. The administrative records comprise prospecti for both High Schools, registers of attendance, 1875-1896, examinations, 1855-1858, 1884-1888, fees, 1863-1869, and corporal punishment, 1892-1896, 1949-1960, and memoranda from the Rector applying to either the boys' division or to both High Schools, 1897-1904. There are also working notes for teachers, 1902-1903, 1921-1931, and scrapbooks of programmes, clippings and notes concerning activities in both schools, covering the years 1913 to 1960. Examination papers, 1872-1882, a guest book, 1919-1943, an annotated address book of High School for Girls staff prepared by Principal L.M. Hendrie, 1911-1945, and photographic portraits of the Principals of the High School for Girls round out this series. Student activities are reflected not only in the official scrapbooks, but also in minute books, photograph albums and scrapbooks of the High School for Girls' Athletic Association, 1912-1913, Literary and Debating Society, 1906-1908, and English Club, 1935-1940. There are a large number of photographs of girls' sports teams, 1915-1941, as well as a scrapbook of clippings on the activity of High School for Girls Alumnae, 1953-1956.

Eleanor Wallis Fonds

Fonds consists chiefly of a scrapbook created by Eleanor Wallis, née Eleanor Fisher, while a nurse at the Grenfell Mission in St. Anthony, Newfoundland, as well as diplomas and certificates for her and her husband, the physician Allan D. Wallis, and reprints of medical articles by Allan D. Wallis. The Grenfell album consists of photographs taken by Eleanor from 1933-1934 and printed items such as postcards, calendar pictures, and reproductions of photos made for sale by the Grenfell Mission. Photographs have handwritten captions with some personal annotations. One of the postcards shows a young nurse walking along a stretch of road leading to the village of St. Anthony's: this is Eleanor Fisher. Some later photocopies have been taped or laid in. Thirteen certificates and diplomas attest to Eleanor Fisher's training as a nurse (1929) and Allan D. Wallis's training as a physician (1925-1959), including Eleanor's Registered Nurse certificate, diploma from the Training School of Nurses of the Pennsylvania Hospital, and pediatrics nursing course certificate, and certificates attesting to Allan's residency training at the Pennsylvania Hospital, medical licence and diplomas, board certification in pathology, and a presidential certificate of appointment as an examining physician for the Pennsylvania Selective Service (this last is accompanied by a letter from the Governor of Pennsylvania). Two folders contain reprints of articles by Allan. D Wallis dating between 1941 and 1954. There are also 9 prints of photographs from the scrapbook, with captions on verso, accompanied by negatives. Lastly, there is one copy of a poem entitled "The Nurse" on oversized paper, the College of American Pathologists Code of Ethics, and one large group portrait photograph of hospital staff.

Ross Family Fonds

The Ross family fonds consists primarily of records related to the student achievements of the Ross children and includes student notebooks, news clippings, convocation programmes, certificates, and memorabilia of the Red and White Revue such as songs, photographs and original songs. Edward Russell Paterson’s student notebooks in geology, petrography and English literature are included.

In addition, there are two diaries of William Stieven Paterson’s from his travels through Civil War battlefields in the southern USA and a trip to Cuba; 8 photograph albums depicting the Paterson side of the family; 3 scrapbooks of magazine stories for children, poems and household hints; and correspondence between Dorothy Jean Ross and the McGill University Archives.

The fonds consists of a scrapbook containing photos, ephemera, and clippings related to the McGill graduates athletic club, Winter Carnival, and copies of the McGill News, approximately 1947. In addition, there is a photograph of Convocation (May 22, 1946), a cardigan sweater and a MOC patch.

Herman Jackrabbit Smith-Johannsen Fonds

The papers of "Jackrabbit" Johannsen reflect his personal, professional and recreational activities, mainly between 1934 and 1985. The largest part of the papers consists of correspondence with friends and organizations, particularly relating to skiing and outdoor life. Family relations are also covered. A series of brief journals provides a record of some of his daily activities, from 1948 to 1984. The remainder of the fonds include publications about Johannsen, photographs, maps and personal documents such as passports.

Richard L. MacDonnell Collection

The collection consists of 3 scrapbooks assembled by Richard L. MacDonnell, and 1 McGill Dissection Room Record Book created and kept by MacDonnell from April 1883-1891. The scrapbooks contain notes, patient prescription information, reprints of various publications by MacDonnell, and lots of news clippings concerning various topics such as the history of Montreal, McGill University, the McGill faculty, Montreal General Hospital, and obituary notices. A second volume of dissection records (1896-1908) was compiled after MacDonnell's death, and can be found in the library catalogue.

Henry Morgan and Co. Fonds

The company's records contain administrative, financial and publicity material. The administrative series comprises the minutes of the directors from 1929 to 1955 and of the executive committee from 1949 to 1956. An engagement book records contracts between the company and its employees, 1902-1906. Henry Morgan's business correspondence covers the period 1847-1850, and includes a few personal letters to his brother James. Financial records cover both internal operations and stock transactions. The former are documented by an account book, 1845-1848; ledgers, 1870-1889; and diaries, 1884, 1936; the latter by lists of stock holders, 1954-1960; and records of transfers of Morgan's common stock, 1954-1961. Also included are files of invoices, receipts and cheques, 1846-1852. Publicity materials largely centre around anniversaries. Scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, other printed materials and photographs cover the years 1936-1945, culminating in the company's centennial, for which a typescript history was prepared.

William Tobin Fonds

Tobin's papers consist of a scrapbook and photo album containing programmes, menus and newspaper clippings concerning the "King Cook" celebrations, 1911-1927, newspaper obituaries and photographs of Medical Faculty professors, programmes for social events of the Medical Society, Pharmaceutical Society and the McGill Employees Association (of which Tobin was secretary) and letters of recommendation from the Medical Students Society, 1921-1931.

Reuben Bennett d'Aigle Fonds

The D'Aigle papers fall into three series: diaries, correspondence and a scrapbook of photographs and memorabilia. The diaries (1912-1914, 1927, 1935-1952) are largely devoted to a day-by-day account of prospecting journeys. Correspondence with members of his family, partners, prospective financial backers and government mining bureaus covers the years 1900-1959. The scrapbook contains personal mementos, newsclippings about D'Aigle, photographs of his journeys, lists of supplies for prospecting trips, and maps, some drawn by D'Aigle himself.
