Most of Lighthall's varied interests and activities are represented in his papers which fall into a number of series. There is a general series of letters and papers 1875-1954 which includes much but not all of the correspondence. There are letters from many Canadian literary figures (before ca 1940) including Duncan Campbell Scott, Charles Sangster, Charles G.D. Roberts, W.W. Campbell and Stephen Leacock. Others represented in this series include Sir Wilfrid Laurier and Sir William Van Horne (about his and Lighthall's collections of pictures). Among the subjects covered are the McCord Museum, the Chateau de Ramezay, the McGill University Library, the Manitoba School question, conscription and imperial government. There are series for the Canadian Author's Association, the Canadian Union of Municipalities, the Metropolitain Parks Commission, the Great War Veterans Association and the Royal Society of Canada. The papers of the Montreal Armenian Relief Committee (1920s) are included, as are Captain MacKenzie Forbes' files from the Military Hospitals Commission, 1917. There is some material on various legal cases in which Lighthall was involved including some Indian land claims. There is a series of personal financial records and some material on Church Union (ca 1910). There is a large series of documents, both originals and copies dealing the region of Huntingdon, Chateauguay and Beauharnois. Most of Lighthall's literary works are represented in draft and/or annotated form including The False Chevalier (1898) and The Master of Life (1908). There is as well Lighthall's index of Canadian author's pseudonyms (ca 1880-ca 1900). In addition to this manuscript material, there is the Lighthall collection of books which contains some three hundred volumes of metaphysics, history and poetry many of which are either inscribed to W.D.L. or contain his annotations.

Fonds consists of lecture notes prepared in connection with a survey course on Greek and Roman literature (1924-1954), as well as examination questions for this course (1951), and copies of humorous verse about McGill staff members.

Fonds contains correspondence and manuscripts. The correspondence is largely devoted to the Tait family’s property in Nova Scotia and other domestic matters, but there are also files regarding Tait’s work at McGill (1928-1942) and at the Nova Scotia Summer School in Education (1927-1941). The fonds also contains a few letters to and from Vincent Massey (1926-1940). Approximately a third of Tait’s papers are drafts of publications on practical psychology, behaviour and behaviourism, educational psychology, psychopathology and social applications of psychology. (ca 1920-1930).

The collection consists of Dr. Powles handwritten notes on some of his medical lectures between 1940 and 1943 as well as three files of course notes related to neurosurgery and neurology, 1943; psychiatry 1942-1950; and sociology, anthropology 1948-1949. There are laboratory note books with drawings, some printed copies of selected exams and printed laboratory handouts. One file contains material relating to his attendance at the Officers' Training School in Brockville, Ontario in 1944 and other papers relating to his service career. There are two maps of military exercises in the North.

In addition there are 2 files of correspondence regarding academic appointments at the University of Cincinnati (1958-1966) and Queen's University (1966- ), and one scrapbook page containing individual sketches of C.P. Martin, Hans Selye, Dr. Dworkin, and David Thompson with clippings on the reverse about a wedding.

There are twelve photographs, one of which is a group photograph of the officers at the Training School.

The fonds consists primarily of Logan's scientific work. A small percentage relates to the affairs of his family and to memorials to Logan after his death. The great majority of the papers consists of scientific correspondence from about 1820 to 1874, but mostly for the years following his appointment to the Survey in 1842. The letters deal with the collection, exchange and description of geological specimens, expeditions under the aegis of the survey, problems of research and scientific interpretation, scientific meetings, and visits by scientists. The number of correspondents, both individuals and learned societies, is very large, but the most substantial bodies of letters are from J.W. Dawson, geologist and Principal of McGill University, James Hall, paleontologist of the New York Geological Survey, Alexander Murray, Logan's chief assistant, and James Lowe of Grenville, Québec, who supplied Logan with specimens and appears to have been casually employed by him on surveying jobs and field trips. Other correspondents include Sanford Fleming, E.D. Ashe of the Québec Observatory, Thomas Sterry Hunt, and R.I. Murchison of the Geographical Society of Great Britain. Some letters pertain to political or social affairs, but usually in close connection with the scientific work of Logan or the Survey. These files contain copies of some of Logan's outgoing letters, as well as some letters addressed to other individuals, generally his assistants. Other scientific papers consist of field trip records (a journal kept during an expedition in 1845, a weather table kept on Lake Superior in the winter of 1846-1847, work records and astronomical readings for surveying projects, notes on mineral deposits, and lists of specimens), manuscripts of three scientific papers, as well as "Observations on the proposed Geological Survey", and manuscript and printed maps and geological schemata, including some by Logan of the Bay of Fundy, Labrador, and Hamilton, Ontario regions. Manuscript catalogues of specimens were prepared by Logan for the Paris Exhibitions of 1855 and 1867. Official reports include Logan's annual reports for 1842-1844, an overview of the work of the Geological Survey, 1866, two reports by Logan on prospects for mining on the north shore of Lake Superior, 1846, 1847, and one on mineral deposits around Rivière-du-Loup, 1853, as well as Logan's copy of his proposed Geological Survey Bill, 1844, and some copies of reports on mining and cartography prepared by others. Logan's financial records include expense accounts for Geological Survey expeditions, as well as other professional expenditures, such as books. His private and family life is reflected by a very brief diary of an Atlantic crossing in 1856, letters to and from his brothers James and Henry, his father, his uncle Hart Logan, and Hart Logan's partner John Fleming, covering the years 1772-1856. There are also baptismal and burial certificates, and legal documents, particularly bills of sale pertaining to James Logan's farm. Memorials to Logan after his death include J.W. Dawson's correspondence concerning the Logan Memorial Fund and Collection, 1881, and a manuscript biography by Alexander Murray. There is a chronological and author/recipient index to these papers.

Additional materials received from McGill Library's Rare Books and Special Collections consist of correspondence, 1837-1871; notices of admission to scientific and historical societies, 1842-1867; a history of the geological survey 1850; a report on mining locations addressed to B. Papineau, 1847; and correspondence with Robert Bell, 1861-1874.

The William Feindel fonds documents the research, writing, teaching, and various professional activities of William Feindel. Materials related to Feindel’s research make up the bulk of the fonds and cover his many research interests in the field of neurology as well as his interest in the history of medicine and the legacies of Wilder Penfield, William Osler, and 17th-century physician and neuroanatomist Thomas Willis. An entire series is dedicated to records related to Feindel’s role as the curator for the Wilder Penfield archives. The William Feindel fonds also documents his work for the Montreal Neurological Institute, his role as Acadia University’s Chancellor, and several professional appointments. A series of notebooks consists of Feindel’s notes on various research topics but also contains notes regarding personal matters. Along with the notebooks, a series that documents Feindel’s personal life includes materials related to his family, his years as a student, and a variety of souvenirs and books that he kept as part of his personal library.

Fonds contains the admission cards of William Forrest for the Montreal Medical Institution Library, the Montreal General Hospital and the lecture of Anatomia Physiologia et Chirurgica of John Stephenson, in 1824-1825. The fonds includes three admission cards.

This collection consists of incoming correspondence concerning some of Gardner's patients, 1898-1900.
