Fish

The series consists of 31 watercolour paintings of fish, created while Elizabeth Gwillim and Mary Symonds were living in Madras, India (modern-day Chennai). The paintings are preceded by an introductory page of notes by Casey A. Wood. The paintings were originally attributed to Gwillim by Wood, largely on the basis of handwriting, but have more recently been tentatively attributed to Mary Symonds approximately around the year 1805 on the basis of information found in the sisters' correspondence. The fishes depicted are identified by a handwritten caption in the margin of each painting. Approximately one third of the paintings also feature an additional caption written in an Urdu script. These paintings may be copies of Symonds' originals created by a local artist in India. Item 30 (Crocodilus palustris) also contains additional manuscript notes.

Symonds, Mary

Flowers

Food research files

This series contains research files compiled by Armstrong during the course of her food research. The files primarily represent multiple visits to Quebec towns and regions. The series is divided into two subseries: (1) Quebec regional food research and (2) Food research subject files. The files in the first subseries are composed primarily of ephemera and research notes collected or created during her travels in various Quebec regions during research food and foodways. These include brochures about and/or published in various regions in Quebec, largely related to agro-tourism; business cards and pamphlets from restaurants, bakeries, and food producers; correspondence with chefs and proprietors, often with recipes attached; clippings; and Armstrong's travel or itinerary notes. Some of the largest files are related to Charlevoix, the Eastern Townships, Lanaudière, and Île d'Orleans. The second subseries contains research materials, notes, correspondence, conference presentations, ephemeral publications, etc. on specific topics, such as "Maple Syrup Pie" and "Cheese" or from particular conferences or events (such as "Culinary Historians Conference, May 2009").

The series also contains a small amount of material pertaining to conferences attended and general cooking ephemera collected by Armstrong, such as loose recipes.

Genealogical Materials

Series Genealogical Materials contains hand-written genealogies, family histories, newspapers, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous writings.

General Correspondence

The series contains Leon Edel's correspondence, with the majority before 1989. The correspondence ranges from personal to professional and literary, with letters from friends, acquaintances, scholars, authors, and publishers, such as Harvard University Press. Files that are significant either because of the correspondent or due to the extent of the correspondence include W. W. Norton, Anais Nin, Hannah Arendt, E. M. Forster, H. Montgomery Hyde, Geoffrey Keynes, and Allen Ginsberg. Many of the letters represent Edel's ongoing work to acquire copies of Henry James's correspondence and seek out information about the author from his contemporaries. Also includes a number of letters related to various lectures given during the 1960s and 1970s.

Glass plate negatives

This series consists of glass plate negatives and other photographic materials with their original boxes relating to the Feather Book, ornithology, falconry, McGill University Library, and Casey Wood. The majority of the glass plates were produced in Berlin, Germany by Agra, while a few were produced in London, England and Toronto, Canada; which is indicated on the boxes the plates were contained in. On many of these boxes, McGill University librarian Dr. G. R. Lomer’s name appears, indicating these plates and photographic materials were used for library-related activities. Most of the plates, photographs, and photographic negatives (1927, 1930, 1956) show pages from the Feather Book by Dionisio Minaggio. Other glass plate negatives and photographic material depict artwork or images relating to ornithology and falconry, a portrait of Casey Wood (1927), Gronvold’s painting of Wood’s parrot John III (1930?), an ornithological archeological exhibit in the Redpath Library (1924), and library stacks in the Redpath Library (1924).
