Sonde Papers

Sonde Papers consist of correspondence, documentation, audio and video pertaining to activities of Sonde (formerly named MUD, Musical Design).

Donald Mackey papers

The Correspondence series contains cards and letters to or from Donald Mackey. The series is arranged chronologically by time period as indicated. The series includes correspondence of special note to/from Rev. David R. L. Clarke, Prime Minister of Canada Pierre-Elliot Trudeau, Alfred Whitehead and Healy Willan.

W. D. Lighthall Papers

The papers of W.D. Lighthall are divided into a number of different series: an Original Series, Letters and Papers, 1881-1946, and a New Series, Letters and Papers, 1865-1954. The greater part of the correspondence is to be found in these two series. Correspondents include the following Canadian literary figures: Duncan Campbell Scott, Charles Sangster, Charles G.D. Roberts, W.W. Campbell and Stephen Leacock. Other represented in these series are Sir Wilfrid Laurier on political questions and Sir William Van Horne on artistic ones. Among other subjects covered are the McCord Museum, the Château de Ramezay, the McGill University Library, the Manitoba school question, conscription and imperial government.

There are series for the Canadian Authors' Association, the Metropolitan Parks Commission, the Great War Veterans' Association and the Royal Society of Canada. The papers of the Montreal Armenian Relief Committee (1920s) are included, as are the papers of secretary, George S. Wilson, of the Society of Canadian Literature, 1889-1890. There is some material on various legal cases in which Lighthall was involved including some Indian land claims. There is a series of personal financial records and some material on church union (ca. 1910). There is also a long series of documents, both originals and copies, dealing with the region of Huntingdon, Chateauguay and Beauharnois, Quebec. Most of Lighthall's literary works are represented in draft and / or annotated form including The False Chevalier (1898) and The Master of Life (1908). There is also Lighthall's index of Canadian authors' pseudonyms (ca. 1880- ca. 1900). Finally, the papers include the dossier of eighteenth-century documents on which Lighthall based his romance The False Chevalier. Among these is a transcription of extracts from the diary of Michel Chartier de Lotbinière (1723-1798).

In addition to this manuscript material, there is the Lighthall Special Collection of books. This collection contains some five hundred titles of works, including reprints, on metaphysics, history and Canadian poetry. Many contain Lighthall's annotations; others are inscribed to him by the author.

Lighthall, W. D. (William Douw), 1857-1954

Architectural drawings and other papers of Percy Nobbs and his associates

The subfonds consists primarily drawings ranging in date from Nobbs' early student projects and competition drawings, to designs for McGill University buildings such as the McGill University Union Building and MacDonald Engineering Building, and designs for domestic and ecclesiastical architecture in Montreal (1897-1957). Non-architectural drawings (1898-1957) include studies of ironwork, a drawing of Rouen in France, designs for the Royal Arms of Canada, a letterhead for the R.C.A.F., a war memorial for the Town of Mount Royal, a medallion for the Shawinigan Water and Power Company and a silver dollar for the Royal Canadian Mint.

Original documents, transcripts, photocopies, and photographs relating to Professor G. R. Mines (1886-1914), assembled by Dr. F. C. MacIntosh, Department of Physiology in 1982-1986 and transferred to the Osler Library on June 18, 1986.

Lighthall Family Papers

Although more than forty members of the Lighthall and allied families are represented in the collection, only those with significant bodies of papers are mentioned here.

The papers of Cybel Wilkes Lighthall include correspondence from family members, and student work from her training as kindergarten teacher (1888-1890). Of particular note are the cut and folded paper designs. [Also, the occupational therapy materials after World War I are of interest.]

The papers of Alice M.S. Lighthall contain correspondence and papers relating to the Montreal branch of the Canadian Authors' Association and the Canadian Guild of Handicrafts. Her wartime letters are to be found in the papers of her parents (W.D.L. and C.W.L.) of her aunt (Katherine Lighthall) and of her grandfather (W.F.L.).

The papers of Anne Dean Lighthall contain some correspondence and two [unpublished] manuscripts: "Histoire de ma conversion" (ca. 1935) and "Oublier? – Jamais! La guerre telle que je l'ai vue en France" (1946).

The papers of W.F. Lighthall and Katherine Lighthall, although not extensive, contain letters from the Reverend Charles Chiniquy as do the papers of Margaret Wright Lighthall. Katherine's papers also include a series of illustrated letters and stories written to her nieces and nephew.

The papers of the Reverend Dr. Henry Wilkes include manuscripts of some of his sermons. The papers of Peter Rutherford include legal and financial records.

Others represented in the collection are William S. Lighthall, George R. Lighthall, Christine Lighthall Henderson, Edward Ellice, D.K. Lighthall, Timothy Hoyle and Cornelia Schuyler Nye. There is, as well, genealogical information and there are many family photographs.

George Taylor Hyde

Subfonds includes designs for domestic architecture in Montreal (133 architectural drawings, 1907-1910), including alterations to existing structures, comprise the bulk of Hyde's architectural projects documented in the archive. Also included is a proposal for the Mission Church in Montreal, an addition to the Presbyterian church in Valleyfield, PQ and a design for an apartment building in Montreal. The subfonds also contains photographs of the finished exteriors of two designs for domestic architecture (1909).

L'essentiel des projets architecturaux de Hyde représentés dans le sous-fonds se rapporte à de l'architecture domestique à Montréal et notamment à des modifications apportées à des structures existantes (1907-1910, 133 dessins). Il y a également une proposition pour la Mission Church de Montréal, une annexe à l'église presbytérienne de Valleyfield (Québec) et le plan d'un immeuble à appartements de Montréal. Le sous-fonds contient 2 photos de la finition extérieure de deux projets d'architecture domestique (1909).
