Jefferson Lewis Collection

This collection is divided into material either by, or about, Wilder Graves Penfield. The material was collected by Lewis in order to write his biography. The fonds also includes materials associated with Mr. Lewis' writing of the biography.

The Penfield material is organized by family member, with the largest portion belonging to Wilder Penfield and his wife Helen Penfield. This material is largely personal in nature. It consists of originals and photocopies of diaries, as well as personal correspondence between Penfield and his wife, family photographs, and ephemera from a variety of social and professional events. There is also a small selection of personal correspondence between family members.

Lewis created drafts, revisions, letters concerning the development of the screenplay, and research material. Correspondence between Lewis and the family is contained in the material covering personal family matters.

Jefferson Lewis

This series contains notes, drafts, research files, and correspondence pertaining to the funding, research, writing, and publication of Something Hidden and its spin-off film concerning Dr. Penfield’s life and work. This series is divided into four subseries: correspondence, research files, manuscript drafts, and memorabilia. The bulk of this section is various drafts of Something Hidden. Some primary material of the Penfields is interfiled with material in this series, presumably consulted in the preparation and editing of various portions of the manuscript.

Research Files

This sub-series consists of all manner of notes and a variety of secondary materials gathered by Lewis as he researched the life of his grandfather. Secondary materials include historical publications, photocopies of reference works, scientific article reprints, and newspaper and magazine clippings. These series also contains dubbed copies of taped interviews with Penfield obtained by Lewis through the CBC, as well as transcripts of these interviews and others conducted by Lewis in the course of preparing the biography.

A newspaper clipping announcing the marriage of Jennie Jefferson and Charles Penfield; a handwritten poem (?); a typed copy of Amos Jefferson's obituary; correspondence from Jennie Jefferson to WGP on Amos Jefferson's background; notes from an interview with WGP dated 1974; a typed Penfield family tree; typed copies of Jennie Jefferson's letters.

Other Penfield Family Members

This series consists of a small cache of papers belonging to other Penfield family members. This series includes correspondence addressed to the mothers of Wilder Penfield and Helen Kermott Penfield, Mrs. E.P. Kermott and Jean Jefferson Penfield; a diary and letters of Penfield’s beloved sister Ruthmary Penfield Inglis, whose brain tumour Penfield unsuccessfully operated on; and a few items pertaining to Penfield’s daughter Ruthmary Penfield Lewis, mother of Jefferson Lewis.

Helen Kermott Penfield

This series contains varied materials created or kept by Helen Kermott Penfield. The series consists of letters, almost exclusively from Wilder, personal documents, diaries, and memorabilia, including an extensive family chronicle composed by Helen. The materials reflect above all Helen’s relationship with Wilder, but give a glimpse of her childhood and education, service in the war, life in England, social activities in Montreal, and travels with Wilder. This series is divided into four sub-series: diaries, correspondence, personal papers, and memorabilia.
