Correspondence

This sub-series consists of correspondence regarding the funding, research, writing and publication of Something Hidden, and its spin-off film. This series also contains a few letters sent by Lewis to acquaintances of the Penfield’s, who responded to Lewis’ request by returning material sent by the Penfield’s to others and retrieved by Lewis by request. This series also contains a small amount of correspondence concerning the Penfield property at Magog Meadows.

Research Files

This sub-series consists of all manner of notes and a variety of secondary materials gathered by Lewis as he researched the life of his grandfather. Secondary materials include historical publications, photocopies of reference works, scientific article reprints, and newspaper and magazine clippings. These series also contains dubbed copies of taped interviews with Penfield obtained by Lewis through the CBC, as well as transcripts of these interviews and others conducted by Lewis in the course of preparing the biography.

Manuscript Drafts

This sub-series consists of various drafts of Something Hidden. The drafts are not always easy to distinguish in terms of chronological sequence, but an effort was made during the initial processing to roughly order the drafts by version and divide them by chapter. Also included are notes for additions and deletions, labeled “Adds and Outs.” At times, some research notes and primary Penfield material are interfiled with the drafts. This series also includes a draft of the screenplay for the film.

Memorabilia

This sub-series contains newspaper clippings, photographs, and travel materials collected by Wilder Penfield, a group of war predictions for 1943 prepared by Wilder Penfield and his friends in 1942, and materials related to the ceremonial side of the MNI.

Correspondence

This sub-series contains letters collected and kept by Helen Kermott Penfield. The bulk of these letters are from Wilder Penfield. Penfield wrote to Helen almost every second day, sending her detailed accounts of life at Princeton and Oxford, as well as extensive descriptions on his personal outlook and inner life. Helen preserved these letters in meticulous order. This sub-series also contains letters from Helen’s mother and grandmother among others. Finally, this sub-series contains a great number of condolences received following the death of Wilder Penfield.

Personal Documents

This sub-series contains Penfield’s passports, commission, some medical records, and a photocopy of his will.

Diaries

This sub-series consists of both original diaries of Wilder Penfield and photocopies of original diaries made by Jefferson Lewis in the course of his research. More precisely, the diaries dating from 1906 to 1914 are originals; those for subsequent years are photocopies of diaries left by Penfield in the vault of the MNI and now part of the Wilder Penfield Archive (P142) held in the Osler Library Archives. These diaries contain an unparalleled personal chronicle of Penfield’s work, travels, encounters, and reflections. The original volumes from his youth provide unique insight into the development of his character and of his ambitions.

Drafts of No Man Alone

This sub-series consists of a typescript draft of Penfield’s final work, his autobiography No Man Alone, which includes his corrections in the margins. The autobiography was published posthumously in 1977 as No Man Alone: A Neurosurgeon’s Life, by Little and Brown in Boston.

This sub-series consists of letters exchanged between Wilder Penfield and his family, friends, and acquaintances. The correspondence is of a general and family nature, but covers many aspects of Penfield’s life, including his financial affairs, the indemnity sought for injuries sustained in the Sussex disaster, contacts with medical and scientific men, personal friendships, and a few letters regarding his partnership with Dr. William Cone. A small amount of professional correspondence also appears in this sub-series.
