Paper written when Dr. Penfield as an Honorary Consultant of the Montreal Neurological Institute. It also appears as Chapter 16 in Second thoughts: science, the arts and the spirit, (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1970). Leslie Kilborn died following the preparation of this article, which was written to accompany the story of the Kilborn family in general and to describe the achievements of Leslie Kilborn in particular.
