The subfonds consists primarily drawings ranging in date from Nobbs' early student projects and competition drawings, to designs for McGill University buildings such as the McGill University Union Building and MacDonald Engineering Building, and designs for domestic and ecclesiastical architecture in Montreal (1897-1957). Non-architectural drawings (1898-1957) include studies of ironwork, a drawing of Rouen in France, designs for the Royal Arms of Canada, a letterhead for the R.C.A.F., a war memorial for the Town of Mount Royal, a medallion for the Shawinigan Water and Power Company and a silver dollar for the Royal Canadian Mint.

“In 1900, the year in which he completed his apprenticeship, Nobbs passed his examination for associate membership in the Royal Institute of British Architects (R.I.B.A.) and won the Institute’s Tite Prize for a design for an isolated clock tower, a work in the then highly fashionable neo-Baroque mode. In the fall of the same year, he embarked on a six-month trip to the Continent, the Tite Prize enabling him to study the architecture and decoration of Northern Italy. Together with another young Edinburgh architect, Ramsay Traquair, who was to succeed him as Macdonald Professor of Architecture at McGill, Nobbs visited Milan, Verona, Venice, Ravenna and Florence – an itinerary made almost obligatory by the publications of John Ruskin and G.E. Street. In 1900, after successfully passing the Royal Institute of British Architects’ examinations, and winning the R.I.B.A. Tite Prize for the design of a freestanding clock tower, Percy Nobbs traveled for several months in Europe. Together with two friends and colleagues—Ramesay Traquair (1874-1952) and Cecil E. (Scott) Burgess (1870-1971)— he traveled to northern Italy visiting Milan, Verona, Venice, Ravenna, and Florence. John Ruskin’s The Stones of Venice (1851-53) and G.E. Street’s Brick and Marble Architecture of the Middle Ages: Notes of a Tour in the North of Italy (1855), stimulated interest in North Italian Gothic Architecture and in the use of architectural colour. Watercolour sketches of Italian marble and mosaic work from this trip helped him to win a second major prize for a scheme for the mosaic decoration of a church. In February 1901, Nobbs presented a paper about the Italian trip, which was published one month later as “Why Go We to Italy?” in The Builders Journal and Architectural Record.

In 1904 Percy Nobbs received the commission from McGill’s board of governors for the design of the Student’s Union on Sherbrooke Street West. The Union was one of several gifts by Sir William Christopher Macdonald (1831-1917), McGill’s great benefactor, and Chancellor of McGill (1914-1917). Work was carried out in association with Montreal architects Hutchison and Wood. In 1965, the building was remodeled to house the McCord Museum of Canadian History. "The McGill Union is a simple four-sided block with a surface of dressed Montreal limestone. But across these elevations, and in a manner entirely and beautifully determined by the interior spaces, Nobbs played with the elements at his disposal. These are simple enough – a broad cornice, string course, oriel windows, late-Gothic mullions, a broken pediment. All are borrowed from the architecture of England, but they are abstracted and used out of context, freely, dictated by the formality and classicism of the building's symmetrical plan and massing. “In November 1904, in connection with choosing a site for a new central power house, [Nobbs] prepared a sketch block plan showing possible locations for future buildings on the grounds and adjoining properties…The proposal served as a convenient expedient for the architect to set forth his planning ideas for the University…. Nobbs’s plan called for an orderly, symmetrical layout of the grounds relating to the main axes of the existing structures with future buildings occupying the perimeter. Ultimately, this would have made the campus an enclosed and quiet precinct within Montreal’s busy core. The house for Charles W. Colby, Chair of History at McGill, was located at 560 Pine Avenue. It no longer exists. Nobbs’s watercolour presentation perspective and elevations in ink are dated 1905-1906. For the project Nobbs formed a temporary association with the Montreal architect David R. Brown. Built around spectacular views of the city below, the house had an unusual twin-gabled front strongly resembling a cottage in the Edinburgh suburb of Colinton, designed by Nobbs’s mentor Robert Lorimer. On the 5th of April 1907, the Macdonald Engineering Building was almost entirely destroyed by fire. Designed by Andrew T. Taylor (1850-1973), the building exterior was solidly built of limestone, but its interior was of mill-construction. Both the interior and the roof of the building were entirely wrecked, and the external stone walls were seriously damaged. Percy Nobbs was commissioned to redesign and rebuild the structure on condition that it be operational for the fall semester that same year, which in fact he achieved. (Norbert Schoenauer, “Percy Erskine Nobbs: Teacher and Builder of Architecture,” Fontanus: from the Collections of McGill University 7 [1996]: 51) In his Macdonald Engineering Building Nobbs pays homage to Richard Norman Shaw (1831-1913). Although the building derives its own character from the local limestone, the relationship of plan elevation, and a programmatic use of detail, its massing looks to Shaw’s work such as Piccadilly Hotel in London. Nobbs’s deference to Shaw also had a deeper consequence. His willingness to accept the resurgent Classicism and the Grand Manner of English architecture as a model suitable for Canada was the final link in a chain of influences and ideas which Nobbs developed in his writing and which he set forth as a course for the development of Canadian architecture. In 1909, Nobbs was commissioned to build the Power House for McGill to provide heat and electricity to many of the campus buildings. It was located on Carleton. (Dr. Penfield) The facilities had previously been housed in the Macdonald Engineering Building that was destroyed by fire in 1907. In 1963 a new power plant was built on the same site.

He received a Master's degree from Edinburgh University in 1896 and subsequently became a pupil of Robert Lorimer, a Scottish architect and leader of the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1900 Nobbs successfully completed examinations at the Royal Institute of British Architects and won the Tite Prize, which enabled him to travel to Italy where he sketched and measured buildings. Between 1901 and 1902 Nobbs practiced architecture in London and won a number of architectural competitions. Nobbs commenced his long association with McGill University in 1903 when he began teaching at the School of Architecture; in the same year he set up his architectural practice in Montreal. One of his earliest works in Canada was the McGill University Union building. In 1909 he began his partnership with George Taylor Hyde which was to last until Hyde's death in 1944. In 1939 Nobbs retired from teaching architecture at McGill. Throughout his career Nobbs executed a variety of projects including buildings for McGill University, city and country houses, and war memorials.

This coat of arms, officially designated on November 21, 1921, was designed to replace the cumbersome accretion that had become the prior coat. Previously, the coat of arms had consisted of an accumulation of the flags of the respective provinces. However, as the number of flags increased, the coat became increasingly cumbersome and was redesigned to reflect the founding peoples of the country as Nobbs saw it. Therefore the coat is emblazoned with the traditional heraldry of the English, the Scottish, the Irish and the French. Below these four emblems three maple leafs are found, united by one stem to symbolize a united Canada. The inscription on the coat reads A MARE USQUE AD MARE , a quotation from Psalm 72, verse 8 which inspired the founders of the Dominion of Canada: “he shall have dominion from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.”

In Suburban Community Planning, Percy Nobbs describes the community building scheme for this project as being able to provide advantages in the following areas: Prospect, Aspect, Heat Losses, Professional Services, Responsible Builder, Amenities, Gardens, Garages, Lanes, Community Land, Central Heating and Economy in construction. As to the houses; “In the Queen Mary’s Garden project a general uniformity of character is aimed at by the scale of the structures, the types of windows and woodwork, and similarity of roof material. The individuality of the several groups of houses is dependent on variations, within limits, of the roof form and the walling. The general types of the house proposed are based more or less upon the old French tradition in the Province – a thoroughly acclimatized style - but the layout and equipment are essentially modern. “ (P. Competition design.
Nobbs’s proposal for the League of Nations Assembly Hall and Secretariat at Geneva, Switzerland was described in The Architect and Building News, as “the one deserving of first mention.” Nobbs’s arrangement, placing the assembly Hall as an isolated unit, with its main frontage facing the Lake allowed for the maximum amount of light and ventilation to the offices. The interior, with imposing dimensions, breadth of scale and a very wide decorative panel, bounded at its upper extremity by the sweep of a vast curve, was considered in many respects, the finest of all interiors submitted by the competitors. All Saints Cathedral was constructed from drawings prepared in the offices of Bertram Goodhue, New York, in 1909 and took several years to build. It was not completed as specified for reasons of economy. The First Great War Explosion in 1916, and the 1945 explosion had affected the cathedral and Nobbs was commissioned to prepare a report in June 1929. Report on the Fabric of the Cathedral of All Saints Halifax, N.S., a lengthy and illustrated document by Nobbs and consulting engineer, Leslie R. Thomson, included four sections: investigation made, condition of the building, recommendations and a summary. Three projects followed the report in the form of alterations (1929), repairs (1946) and additions (1955). The last was not carried out due to lack of funding from the congregation at All Saints Cathedral.

In 1930, in response to increasing membership, Nobbs and Hyde were directed to prepare plans for a southern extension of the existing University Club, while at the same time a competition was held for a new club building to be constructed on Redpath St. Assessors were J.S. Archibald, Ernest Barott, and Ernest Cormier. Competitors where A.T. Galt Durnford, H.L. Fetherstonhaugh, H.E. Shorey, and J. Cecil McDougall, the latter submitting the winning entry.

One of his earliest works in Canada was the McGill University Union building. In 1909 he began his partnership with George Taylor Hyde which was to last until Hyde's death in 1944. In 1939 Nobbs retired from teaching architecture at McGill. Throughout his career Nobbs executed a variety of projects including buildings for McGill University, city and country houses, and war memorials.

Nobbs’s design for the Coat of Arms of Westmount, carried out by Lyons of Edinburgh, consists principally of three symbols laid on a pointed shield. A half setting sun casting its rays marked the shape of the shield, the same as that which the city of Westmount already used. Below the sun lies a crow, in descending flight, carrying a loaf of bread in its mouth and with the cross of St. Anthony on its back. The crow with the loaf is a biblical reference to St. Paul and his meeting with St. Anthony. Surmounting the two other symbols is a crown, and there is a motto given: NOCTE-UT-INTERDIU-TUTA [As safe by night as by day].
Percy Erskine Nobbs (1875-1964) and George Taylor Hyde (1879-1944) worked together from 1910 until Hyde's death in 1944. Nobbs and Hyde's architectural practice is documented almost in its entirety in the CAC archive which records 420 projects of the firm. This medal commemorates the late Right Honourable Baron Geddes (1879-1954), former Principle of the University (1919-1920), and former commanding officer of the Contingent. Nobbs had known Auckland Geddes since the 1890’s and in the architect’s papers we find lengthy and detailed notes about the career of Lord Auckland Campbell Geddes. Sculptor for the medal was Guido Casino who had also made the John Cabot monument in front of the Montreal Forum. John Cabot c.1451- c.1498, was an Italian explorer in the service of the English Crown. Goldsmiths for the medals, which weighed nearly two ounces each, were P. Vaughton and Sons, Goldsmiths and Medallists of Birmingham, England.

In 1939 Nobbs retired from teaching architecture at McGill. Nobbs was born in Haddington, Scotland, in 1875. Shortly thereafter his family moved to St. Petersburg where he studied at the School of Design. He received a Master's degree from Edinburgh University in 1896 and subsequently became a pupil of Robert Lorimer, a Scottish architect and leader of the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1900 Nobbs successfully completed examinations at the Royal Institute of British Architects and won the Tite Prize, which enabled him to travel to Italy where he sketched and measured buildings. Between 1901 and 1902 Nobbs practiced architecture in London and won a number of architectural competitions. Nobbs commenced his long association with McGill University in 1903 when he began teaching at the School of Architecture; in the same year he set up his architectural practice in Montreal. One of his earliest works in Canada was the McGill University Union building. In 1909 he began his partnership with George Taylor Hyde which was to last until Hyde's death in 1944. In 1939 Nobbs retired from teaching architecture at McGill. Throughout his career Nobbs executed a variety of projects including buildings for McGill University, city and country houses, and war memorials.

Included are examples of alphabets on printed pages.
Among Nobbs’s architectural drawing folders is a collection of lettering which he used for leaded letters for inscription on tablets or incised lettering in building stonework. These drawings in pencil, ink, watercolor, black line or blueprint include examples of letters of the alphabet or numbers, and in several cases we find inscriptions which relate to specific projects and clients such as Christ Church Cathedral, Church of St. Andrews and St. Paul, The Cutlers Company of Sheffield, Francis John Shepherd, Major Ferdinand George Macculloch and Sir Wilfrid Laurier.
