Oskar Cameron Grüner was born in Altrincham, England. He received his M.D. from London University in 1908. Between 1910 to 1914, he was Pathologist to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and Assistant Professor of Pathology at McGill University. During World War I, he became chief of the Tropical Diseases Section of East Leeds War Hospital. From 1932 until his retirement in 1945, he was in charge of the Archibald Cancer Research Fund and of the Cancer Department of St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal. Besides his medical interests, Dr. Gruner was also an excellent linguist. He published several books and many articles on cancer. He died in Montreal in 1972.

Browne, Arthur Adderly, 1848-1910

Arthur Adderly Browne received his M.D. at McGill University in 1872. He was an intimate friend of Sir William Osler in the latter’s Montreal years. They did post graduate studies in Europe, 1872-1874. Browne was an Elective Fellow of the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University in 1879 and Professor of Midwifery and Children’s Diseases from 1883 to 1887. He died in Montreal in 1910.

Thomas Gibson was born in Ireland and received his medical training at Edinburgh. In 1895, he came to Canada as medical A.D.C. to the Governor-General, Lord Aberdeen. He set up practice in Ottawa and was medical attendant to four successive Governors-General. In 1924, he accepted the Douglas Chair of Therapeutics and Pharmacology at Queens University, Kingston. Gibson was known not only for his teaching but also for his historical writings on medical subjects.

Samuel Hanford McKee was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and received his B.A. from the University of New Brunswick in 1896. He graduated M.D., C.M. from McGill in 1900. McKee’s special interest was ophthalmology and he was awarded the C.M.G. for distinguished service in the field during the First World War. Until he resigned in 1943, he was Clinical Professor in Ophthalmology at McGill from 1928, Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Montreal General Hospital from 1931, and Chairman of the Hospital’s Medical Board from 1938.

Frederick Holland Mackay was born in Prince Edward Island in 1884 and educated at the Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown. After a period in a C.P.R. construction camp in Western Canada, Mackay came to McGill to study medicine. He graduated in 1912. His experiences in France during the First World War determined his interest in neurology, and he was Assistant Neurologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital and later Neurologist at the Montreal General Hospital.

George Duncan Gibb was born in Montreal in 1821 and graduated in medicine from McGill University in 1846. He practiced in London, England, and was the author of many books and articles on diseases of the throat. In 1850, Gibb was Librarian and Curator of the Natural History Society of Montreal.
